A Colourful Nursery

Blow It vs Budget

Vicky Kieldsen  shows us how to create a stunning colourful nursery

that you and your baby will love to spend time in.

Are you day dreaming about a new nursery?  If so and you want it to be full of colour for you and your new baby, then this is the perfect place to be.

If the last 12 months have taught us anything it is that colour has well and truly been thrown in our slightly jaded faces.  I’m not sure there is a better way to lift spirits than to see a flash of bright colour, it’s like Vitamin D for our eyes! Whether it’s on your nails, the NHS rainbow, your new lockdown puppy, or climbing the walls of your home.  Rooomy is here to help you take the plunge into a more colourful lifestyle… starting with your children’s rooms.

Choosing the right colour for the room can have a big impact on your child’s mood. Children need spaces in their homes where they can retreat to, not only for quiet reflection, but also to help them grow and explore. It is extremely important to a child’s wellbeing that they have a space that suits them, both emotionally and physically. That will not only enable them to feel safe and happy, but will also encourage their personality, creativity and receptiveness in a stress reducing environment.

Did you know that blue can relax and improve productivity? Or that pink can reduce anger, grey can enhance creativity and green is extremely calming? It’s very important to think about your child’s personality when embarking on a new colour palette for their room.

This nursery has such a calm and soft feel to it with the pastel tones but then hits you with some powerful pinks in various shades. The overall balance of the nursery works so well because the main items are all in the softer shades of colours and then the odd accessory pops out to bring that dose of brightness, such as the bright pink shell cushion, or the rainbow on the chair.

I particularly love the contrast between the dusky pink wall and the sage green locker. Don’t be afraid to experiment with shades of the same colour as they can work well together. And allow yourself to push you a little bit out of your comfort zone, as this is when exciting things can be created. After all, playful environments make for playful children and, to me, that equals happiness.

Which item do you love most?  I am drawn to the storage lockers and the wall prints and hangings.  The soft snake toys are fun but I must say the animal rigs still freak me out, just like the animal head wall decor, it’s been a huge trend over the past three years, but I can’t quite get on board.  I do see how they can be a lot of fun for the kids though and they make a great statement in any room.

Have fun designing!

Thank you Vicky!  These fab nursery looks can be achieved for £1,686 or £764 and of course the great part is, if you can save on a few items then you might be able to splash out on a luxury piece that could become part of the family home at a later date.  Above all you now have a great shopping list, why not mix and match?  If you’d like to see more of Vicky’s work check out her site here Hello Geronimo

A Bohemian Nursery

Blow It vs Budget

Medina King shows us how to create a gorgeous boho nursery

that you and your baby will love to spend time in.

The bohemian nursery is the current trend – and rightly so with its use of natural materials and gender-neutral colour scheme, making it fit for a baby boy or a baby girl, as well as the parents.

The boho look is agile and fits the type of scheme that grows with the child, it can be converted to a family space or a home office. The nursery is also budget friendly.

Which item do you love most?  I am drawn to the plants, I always am, I can never keep them alive but they make such a difference to a room especially for kids, bringing the outdoors in, cleaning the air and they bring a simple softness to the space.  I do love the Moroccan pouffes too, they do bring sense of travel to the room, great for kids to climb on, a extra sitting space for little bottoms and of course perfect for weary adult feet.

Study Space for Teenagers

Blow It vs Budget

Lisa Riddoch shows us how to create an organised and fun

work space for our revising teenagers.

For this issue I’ve focused on designing a teen workspace. At this age there is a lot of work that needs to be done at home, so it goes without saying that teenagers need a purposeful work area. It doesn’t have to be in their bedroom either, for example if you have a quiet corner in the dining room maybe this would suit you better.

It’s always a great idea to get your teens involved in the design and let them have fun personalising their workspace. I’ve put together a scandi design for a teenage girl who’s inspired by travel as you can see in the artwork. I have kept the furniture neutral and added colour with artwork and accessories, you could easily change the colour scheme and personalise your teens desk space by changing the artwork and picking out a few accessories that colour coordinate.

The accessory that got me really excited is the wall planner. It’s designed specifically for the academic year and not only is it a great wall feature, it’s also super useful. My kids are too young for this now but I would use it to help plan and organise their time and so I’m kept in the loop too! The budget option is a digital download so you can either print it at home or in the past I’ve emailed the file to the printers, of course if it’s easier go with the blow it option and have the planner sent to you.

Pretty in Pink, Girls Room

Lisa Riddoch takes us on a tour of her daughter’s bedroom

and shows us how to recreate the look

I designed this room for my Evie. She is really into science and like most six year old girls she is fiercely independent so the inspiration for the room came from a black and white image I found of a female astronaut and I combined the theme with a Scandi feel, in keeping with the rest of our home.

I chose a pink by Valspar Paint in a premium finish which is a scrubbable paint. Firstly I have to say I did not choose pink because it’s a girls room. In interiors pink has taken on a new meaning, it represents strong women/girls and Peekaboo by Valspar is the perfect shade of pink for this statement. I used colour blocking, only painting 2/3 of the walls to strike the right balance of colour for the size of the room. To add an element of fun I used moon and stars wall stickers around the cabin bed and we made our own wall statements using black letter banners.

The cabin bed was from Ikea and came with the desk which I’ve used on the opposite wall. I replaced the desk under the bed with a sofa bed which makes a cosy reading nook and is perfect for sleepovers.

My daughters favourite pieces have to be the personal touches, her name in the pink neon light and the Polaroid style family photos attached with glitter washi tape.

And there you have it, a pink bedroom for a girl to grow up in, there won’t be any expensive updates for several years, unless they massively go off the colour pink, but bedding and painted walls are easy to update at little cost, the investment in the bed and a few other accessories will last for many years to come.

These fab looks can be achieved for £347 or £1,972 and of course the great part is, if you can save on a few items then you might be able to splash out on a luxury piece that can either become part of the family home or it can be re-sold, this is the biggest bonus when investing in good furniture.

Mel Webber takes us on a tour of two-tone boy’s bedroom

and shows us how to recreate the look

This is Thomas’ room, he’s incredibly lucky to have such a large bedroom but that in itself was a challenge as he’s only 3 and I wanted the room to still feel cosy. He asked for a blue bedroom, so I used my favourite shade Little Greene Hicks Blue to create a half wall paint effect which brings the room in and makes the room feel smaller and cosier at his level. I then added lots of artwork and shelving to break up the white walls. These can be swapped out over time but for now we’re embracing his love of animals and the circus. The bed is by Oeuf NYC and has a seat built into the end where all his favourite cuddly toys live, and I’ve used pretty baskets to store toys and the Ooh Noo toy chest to hold all his books.

Yay to rooms that make you feel like this (see pics below)

Mel Webber takes us on a tour of her son’s bedroom

and shows us how to recreate the look with opposing budgets

This is Thomas’ bedroom. We had moved him out of his nursery into the spare room, in order to free up the nursery for his baby sister. As soon as I saw this “D’ya-think-esaurus” wallpaper by Paper Boy I just knew it was perfect for his room as it shows a fearless little boy playing with his dinosaur friends. I knew that he would love it but the classic white and silver colour way appealed to me and dad too. We chose a limited colour palette of monochrome, grey and silver throughout the rest of the room, and decorated with a very loose dinosaur theme to ensure it always looks stylish even when filled with all his colourful toys and treasures.

And there you have it, a monochrome bedroom for your son or daughter to grow up in, there won’t be any expensive updates for at least 5 years, and you can add splashes of colour with cushions and other inexpensive accessories.

This gorgeous look can be achieved for £510 or £1,145 and of course the great part is, if you can save on a few items then you might be able to splash out on a luxury piece that can either become part of the family home or it can be re-sold, this is the biggest bonus when investing in furniture.
