A Mountain theme Bedroom for a Nature Loving Boy

Wilf (12) needed a new room to support his wellbeing

and to reflect his love of nature.

The initial brief was to create a room that Wilf (12) could grow into, with separated out zones for work, rest and play.  But it was very much designed around his specific needs which really impacted his wellbeing. Part of his condition affects the way he processes sensory information so he needed a space that felt calm and safe. So warm enveloping colours and a den-like safe place to retreat to when feeling overwhelmed was key.  We created him a mountain theme for a boys bedroom.

Mum is a Forest School teacher and so they are massively into nature, sustainability and renewable energy (they have an electric car for instance). This naturally had me thinking all things nature and organic products. He also had many collections of books and treasured items which either needed to be ordered and/or included in the design.

His Pinterest page (that I asked him to create) reflected images of nature, animals and the planets. The room images were all warm dark inky shades with diffused lighting. It was clear to me that even the hero items in this space literally had to be part of the landscape! I presented the concept image for his room and gained his positive feedback and constructive criticism to start developing the design.

As the main backdrop I chose a mountain scene wallpaper that wrapped two walls. Because of the way he deciphers some things we offered a few choices as we had to be careful that he couldn’t distinguish any scary faces/images in the patterned wallpaper!  I then matched the colours from this palette and wrapped the other two walls in dark blue and took the lighter blue over the ceiling.

My presentation is always to Mum and Dad first. Reason being; is so they can edit the options to suit their budget and also have a little control on how much they want to dial up or down the scheme. It always stays true to the scheme though and still leaves plenty of options for them to choose which provides a fun and collaborative experience.

I loved presenting this room to Wilf, he literally marked me out of 10 for each item, so it was that cut and dry on final edit!

“It makes me feel calm and safe. The colours are soothing and there’s no sharp angles, which makes it feel easy on my eyes, this helps me with aspects of my autism”

The bed was bespoke designed by me, allowing plenty of shelving for books on all sides. There’s even some secret compartments within the bed that even his brother doesn’t know about! It’s made out of Valchromat, essentially a wood fibre that’s individually impregnated with organic dye, so no need for paint, it’s therefore incredibly durable!

The desk and shelves are also bespoke design by me, and out of the same material.

The wardrobe storage fits neatly into the ceiling end of the room and leaves room for a bed-settee. Coffee table, pouffes (and cork notice-board) so he can chill out with friends.

All the lighting is dimmable and diffused to ensure no bare bulbs for glare. He loves the monkey bed-side light, which looks like it’s climbed it’s own monkey bars in the bed! The planet mobile is a stunning piece of art in itself which I’m sure he’ll keep for many years to come! He also has a projector which projects stars and planets on the ceiling to create different scenes for calming. The pendant replicates a fluffy cloud suspended against the mountain scene wallpaper!

It’s a space to work, play & socialise but most importantly to escape to when things get too much. I received the warmest of hugs when it was all completed. A tearful career high for me!

“It’s got everything, tons of cool stuff without being overwhelming.

There’s space for my books, collections, work and even a secret hiding space in my bed.

Marks out of 10, I’d give it a 10, there’s so many cool features!”

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

One family, two rooms, with the aim of keeping a touch of South Africa Part 2

This family needed a wonderful nursery for their baby girls.  They’d moved from Cape Town to England with two daughters and a baby due in a few weeks.  PIA Design to the rescue and they create two fantastic rooms just in time for babies arrival.

Our clients are from Cape Town, South Africa, and wanted their home to be inspired by the textures and colours of their home – they were also interested in designing sustainably, so we looked at natural materials like cork and 100% natural fibre fabrics and started by using the furniture the client already owned.

This gorgeous riverside property was in fantastic condition having been refurbished with a minimal colour palette not too long before our clients moved in, but the client felt the rooms could be re-decorated to add some interest and personality to suit their own taste.

As the family already live in the house with their two young girls and new-born, we tackled the design a few rooms at a time. We started with the design of the little girls’ room and nursery, which were finished just weeks before the baby arrived. Here’s the Nursery, you can see the girl’s shared bedroom in Part 1 here.

Our brief was to design a gender-neutral room for the baby that had a calming and light atmosphere. We often start brainstorming a project by looking for inspiration on furniture websites that we love, in our design library for wallpaper and fabric samples, and Pinterest for scheme ideas. We were seeing a lot of jungle themed rooms which we thought could be fun but did not quite line with the client’s vision of the room. We pitched scheme ideas in warm and neutral colour schemes that paired well with the client’s existing rattan cot and nursing chair.

The nursery was heavily inspired by the colours, textures and materials associated with South Africa, where our clients are from. We started by creating mood boards featuring fabric, wallpaper, and hard finish samples such as grass cloth wallpapers, natural cork panelling and thick, textured fabrics in rustic tones. This helped us create a tactile and organic impression of what the room would feel like. The client really loved our suggestions, and it was a mutual agreement that we would select samples for this room that had a soft and warm vibe, with lighter wood tones and layered soft furnishings.

The scheme generally came together easily, we did have some back and forth about wallpaper options to use on the feature wall behind the cot. We tried a few fun prints from Cole & Son as well as geometric printed patterns; these felt too flat for the look we were trying to achieve. It was not until we began trying textured wallpapers that we felt we were on the right track. In the end, a stunning woven chevron wallcovering from Arte was the right solution that the client loved. We trial and error these design changes by editing visuals of the rooms that we create in Photoshop and sharing wallpaper samples with the client to approve. This process makes testing lots of options very quick, the end result is exactly how the visual suggests.

To make the storage in this room adapt with the new baby as they grew, we suggested bespoke joinery that we could design the internals of, rather than an off the shelf product. We discussed all of the storage requirements to make sure we were designing exactly what the client wanted. By incorporating adjustable shelves and hanging rails into the design, the these can be moved when clothing requirements change over time. The gold leaf and whitewashed cork panels we had inserted into the shaker frames of the wardrobe doors add a touch of timeless luxury that should stand the test of time and adapt with any changes made to the room scheme over time. Anthropologie leather and brass handles added an extra touch of luxury to the beautiful wardrobe.

For the window dressings, we used a layered approach of over-length linen curtains with a subtle chevron pattern, as well as a blackout roman blind with a black and white embroidered motif for contrast. As well as being a beautiful design feature that felt luxurious and comforting, it was practical in blocking out as much light as possible to make sure the baby could sleep as soundly as possible!

We didn’t want the room to feel too refined and neutral (it’s a kids room after all!), so we popped in some fun accents like the African animal prints on the wall and the funky Pooky floor lamp with a contrasting black and white pleated shade. We added some natural textured accessories with the elephant head wall hanging, rattan mirror, seagrass storage baskets and leather footstool.

Baby Girl Nursery by PIA design featured by rooomy magazine

We have since worked on other rooms for this family’s home and their feedback from spending more time in the Nursery is that it’s become a popular room to come together and relax on the giant sheepskin rug!

When we were signed on to the project we had an 8 week deadline to work to before the clients baby was due, we wanted to make sure the room was finished and ready by this time. This offered some challenges with fabric and wallpaper lead times, coordinating the joinery and decorating works to finish on time, and of course enough time to go through design changes. However, it all came together nicely in the end and the client loved the soft nature of the room with natural accents that reminded them of their home in South Africa, the light and warm atmosphere of the room has a calming effect.

PIA Design’s objective is to interpret the style preferences of each client and develop something tailored to them. As a result all projects take on their own, unique direction, but there is also a common thread that underlies each one, apparent in the use of natural  materials – wood, stone, cork, metal etc, that can be used to add texture, but also colour to a scheme before simply specifying paint.

A love of nature is at the heart of PIA’s designs and her philosophy is that the best form of sustainability is a carefully considered scheme and the use of quality materials – natural materials have a timeless quality about them that surpasses trends whilst also standing the test of time: some materials even grow more beautiful with age.

Perfect Pink Girls Bedroom For Two

One family, two rooms, with the aim of keeping a touch of South Africa Part 1

The perfect pink girls bedroom for two after you’ve moved from Cape Town to England, with a baby due in a few weeks.

As the family already live in the house with their two young girls and new-born, we tackled the design a few rooms at a time. We started with the design of the little girls’ room and nursery, which were finished just weeks before the baby arrived. Here’s the Girls room, Part 2 will follow soon.

For the girl’s room we used subtle colours and plenty of texture to give the room a nature-inspired uplift – and schemes that can easily adapt and evolve as the children grow up. The client wanted the girl’s room to feel restful as well as fun, with spaces for the girls to play and work.

We began the design for this perfect pink girls bedroom by bringing together fabric and wallpaper samples, we wanted to create a room that had a soft and subtle base. This could then adapt easily to furniture and accessory changes as the girls grew and as their interests change over time. We were drawn to dusty pink shades, greys, beiges, and warm wooden tones for this room as they’re easy neutrals that can pair well with other colours.

Behind the twin beds we chose a feature wall using a pink distressed design wallpaper from Elitis, the pattern of which is a subtle nod to the South African inspired mood board we put together for the room schemes. The carpet in this room also needed changing as we had to remove some existing joinery from the house’s original owners that had left indents in the existing carpets. In keeping with the blush tones of the room, we selected a warm beige carpet with a slight rosy hue.

We had initially discussed designing some bespoke bunk beds for the girls bedroom as a fun feature piece of joinery. We ran into challenges with the sloped ceiling not allowing a lot of room for the top bunk. As well as this, we worked with our joiner to make sure everything was structurally sound, which resulted in some of our design choices being compromised. In the end it was agreed with the client that two double beds were a smarter choice and helped to future proof the room as the girls grew up. Looking back, it was the right choice to make as the final result has a more refined atmosphere.

Girls Pink Shared Bedroom by PIA design featuerd by Rooomy Magazine

We designed bespoke wardrobes for this room with ample storage space that had adjustable shelves and hanging rails that would make the wardrobes adapt with the girl’s storage needs as they grew older. The whitewashed oak shaker doors of the wardrobes feature beautiful gold leaf embellished cork panels, and we added an extra touch of luxury with some leather and brass handles from Anthropologie.

Our original design for the joinery in this room had less wardrobe space and a double desk for the girls to work at together. After reviewing this with the client, it was agreed that the girls would need more storage space and that separate desks would mean homework could be completed much more efficiently! We had bespoke fitted desks fitted into the rooms by the windows. On our site visits to discuss the designs with the clients we noticed both girls enjoyed colouring and so we made sure each desk was fitted with custom cork panels wrapped in De Le Cuona fabric for the girls to pin up their artistic creations.

There was not enough space either side of the window in this room to have full length curtains so we picked a beautiful fabric from Christopher Farr to have bespoke roman blinds made. To add a bit of extra luxury to the blinds, we opted for a wide trim around the edges in a stunning De Le Cuona fabric.

The client had beautiful, framed prints by Mrs Mighetto that we wanted to display in this room, they fit nicely above the beds and we had space in the centre for another piece of artwork. We asked the girls what other accessories they would like in their new room; they loved the grass woven elephant head we had chosen for the nursery (to be revealed here soon) so we found a similar product from Maisons Du Monde which completed the wall nicely.

We specified a sheepskin rug in this room as it proved to be a popular choice in the nursery! The collection of decorative cushions and throws we sourced from John Lewis and gave the beds an extra cosy vibe. We paired the rattan bedside tables with some art deco style table lamps for a contrast between natural elements and contemporary luxury.

Compared to the Nursery, this perfect pink girls bedroom was slightly more challenging to coordinate as it was larger and required the additional time needed to remove and install new carpets. But it came together just as easily with all the thorough planning we did, and the end result is something we are really proud of. It’s a room that will stand the test of time and always have a good balance between fun and neutral. The girls enjoy having a bedroom together, their own grown-up beds and desk spaces of their own which have been used for many artistic endeavours since!

Part 2 – The Nursery, to follow in a few weeks.

‘How To’ guide for two striking, fun, rooms for kids

Dulux Sports themed room, creative director expert tips as seen in rooomy magazine

Sport Room

There is a joyful energy to the colour orange, which is perfectly captured in this sporty theme. We chose Tangerine Twist because it has more zest than sweetness, which appeals to both boys and girls, and looks fabulous with a bit of contrasting blue in the accessories.

The running track painted wall effect is simple, clean, graphic and really easy to achieve. The trick to getting the look sharp and keeping the orange glowing is to paint the wall white before you start and mask off the white tracks with wide low tack masking tape. The big stencils are easy to find online and the white is applied through the stencil with a foam radiator roller.

All in all, this is a decorating event that’s easy to enter without any training – and you’re guaranteed to take first place on the podium!

Paint credit – Jasmine White & Tangerine Twist

Expert tips

Before you start, here’s a few things to look out for:

  1. Use good quality low tack 2” decorators masking tape.
  2. Use a spirit level to check horizontal line for positioning numbers.
  3. Make sure that the foam roller or sponge for stencilling doesn’t have too much paint on it when you apply paint through the stencil. Load it with paint and then roll or dab off the excess onto some old paper before you start.

You will need:

Jasmine White Easycare matt – enough to paint the whole room

2.5 litre Tangerine Twist Easycare matt paint

5 x rolls of 2” low tack decorators masking tape (Frog tape)

1 x roll of 1” normal masking tape

2 x Dulux 2” brushes

Coloured chalk (we recommend children’s coloured chalks, as they stain less)

Ball of white string

Drawing pins

Number stencils

1 x small Dulux roller kit

2 x large Dulux roller kits

Dust sheets

Small stepladder

How to:

Step 1: Paint the walls Jasmine White.

Step 2: Measure and mark the position of the track lines at the top of the wall using coloured chalk

Step 3: Run some coloured chalk over the string of a plumb line and then line up with the measurements and fix with masking tape.

Step 4: Allow the weight to stop moving then pull the string tight against the wall and ‘pluck’ it off the surface to create a chalked line.

Step 5: Follow the chalked lines with masking tape and rub the edges down well.

Step 6: Apply a coat of white background colour over the masking tape to seal the edges and allow to dry.

Step 7: Apply two coats of Tangerine Twist Easycare matt to your wall, allowing the first coat to fully dry before applying the second.

Step 8: When the second coat is touch-dry, remove the masking tape carefully.

Step 9: Snap a horizontal chalk line to help position the number stencils. Make sure they are evenly spaced and then hold in place with masking tape.

Step 10: Use a small foam radiator roller to apply white over them – they will need two coats, so leave stencil in place between coats.

Circus Room

Red and white combinations in a decorating scheme are like a visual sweet shop. Always associated with performance and fun, bold stripes of colour instantly conjure up the excitement of the big top!

We designed this simple but effective painted technique to transform a bedroom into a circus tent and it’s something you can easily do over a weekend.

The effect is achieved with stuff that’s easy to get hold of: string, coloured chalk, cardboard, masking tape and red paint. You could use a pair of stilts for painting the ceiling, but a stepladder works just as well!

The secret to success with this look is to avoid too much clutter in the furnishings, accessories and artwork – allow the imagination to fill the space.

Paint credits

  • Banana Split
  • White Cotton
  • Pepper Red
Circus theme bedroom by dulux as seen in rooomy magazine with expert tips from creative director

You will need:

White Cotton – enough to paint the room plus a 2.5 litre tin for the ceiling.

2 x 2.5 litre Pepper Red paint tins

6 x rolls of low tack decorator’s tape

2 x Dulux roller kits

2 x Dulux 2” brushes

Tape measure

Coloured chalk (we recommend children’s coloured chalks, as they stain less)

Ball of white string

Drawing pins

Dust sheets

4-5 Step ladder (preferably with a grab handle)

For your skirting we recommend Banana Split as the perfect accent for this room

How to:

Step 1: Create a blank canvas by painting the ceiling and walls in White Cotton.

Step 2: Now find the centre point of your ceiling and mark it with coloured chalk.

Step 3: Once you’ve done that, measure the length of all the walls and divide them into an even number that will give you approximately 50-60cm wide stripes (although this will depend on the size of your room).

Step 4: Measure and mark your 50-60cm wide stripes along the top of the wall using coloured chalk.

Step 5: Next, cut a piece of string that will easily stretch from your marked centre point in the ceiling to the edges and run it over a stick of coloured chalk a couple of times.

Step 6: Tie a knot at one end of the string and use a drawing pin to hold the end in place at the marked centre of the ceiling.

Step 7: Line it up with a mark on the edge, pull tight and then ‘snap’ a chalk line onto the ceiling. Do this for every measured mark (you will need to apply more chalk as you go).

Step 8: Tape along the outside of the red stripes and rub your finger over the tape to make sure it’s stuck down really well to avoid any paint leaking over its line.

Step 9: Apply a quick coat of White Cotton over the edge of the tape you are going to paint red and allow to dry.

Step 10: Fill in with red using a small roller and brush. Leave to dry, then give it a second coat.

Step 11: Remove tape and touch up any little mistakes with a small artists brush. Ta-dah!

Kid’s Art Charity Sale for the Hungry and Vulnerable

Print’s and Designs for your kid’s room that will make a beautiful addition to the family whilst ALL proceeds go to UK charities FareShare and Magic Breakfast

Throughout this year I have shared several wonderful pieces of art that would look great in a kid’s room or around the family home.  I think Art is a wonderful accessory that must not be overlooked in children’s bedrooms.  When our children are young, we can choose pieces that reflect the mood we want to create in the room are we looking for calm and nurturing, something more bold and fearless or adventurous maybe, we’re in change.  But as children grow older art is the perfect way to help them have a sense of great autonomy in their own space when you give them a chance to look at several pieces of art and ask them to choose what they like best.  It’s a fun task to do together and you might even learn something about your child’s taste and interests that you didn’t know before.

With all of this in the back of my mind I was thrilled to hear from Emma at Margaret as this Christmas, they have launched a ‘kid’s art prints charity sale’ and it’s now online and ready for customers!

With food poverty in the UK the highest it has ever been, proceeds from this sale will help support the ongoing and growing work of organisations helping children and families with this very basic need. The artists who have donated prints are Owen Davey, Rob Hodgson, Yasmeen Ismail, Ben Javens, Louise Lockhart, Gayle Mansfield Designs, Sarina Mantle / Wildsuga, Max Made Me Do It, Margo McDaid, Leyla Reynolds, Laetitia Rouget and Donna Wilson. We also have some original, hand-drawn Duggee drawings from Hey Duggee! creator Grant Orchard!

£30 for one of these incredible prints makes a wonderful gift or a great way to add some personality to your space.  Why not show your kid’s the selection and see what they choose, they might surprise you.  But knowing that the proceeds of each print will be shared 50/50 between these two amazing charities makes a purchase a no brainer in my mind.

Here’s more about the charities as it’s important to know where the money is going and how valuably it is being used.

FareShare

FareShare UK – The UK’s longest running food redistribution charity. Born out of the belief that no good food should go to waste, especially when people are going hungry.   During this year you’ll have heard about the fight for free school meals for children and how Marcus Rushford campaigned and supported this need.  He is now an ambassador for FareShare and has supported them by helping to raise enough money to enable FareShare to provide enough food for over 4.2 million meals for children and families who might not otherwise eat during the Covid-19 crisis.  He has raised awareness of child hunger in the UK, driving the issue to the top of the news agenda.  He has successfully influenced government policy with his #MakeTheUTurn campaign, which saw the voucher scheme – a replacement for free school meals through the lockdown – extended over the summer, ensuring 1.3 million vulnerable children could continue to access food.  And launched and spearheaded the Child Food Poverty Taskforce, a group of more than 15 organisations that FareShare is a founding member of, which have come together to support the National Food Strategy and dedicate their platforms to sharing real stories of those affected by child food insecurity in the UK, supported by real-time statistics

Magic Breakfast – Work in 480 Primary, Secondary and ASL/Special Educational Needs schools, plus Pupil Referral Units, to make sure that, in normal times, more than 48,000 children start their school day in the best possible way.  They’re commitment is that no child is too hungry to learn, by providing healthy breakfast food and expert support to help identify and reach those pupils at risk of hunger. A hungry child cannot concentrate so could miss out on half a day of lessons every school day if not given anything nutritious to eat first thing.

“Magic Breakfast, for us, is our life-saver! Without their support we could not offer free breakfast to the many children within our school community who need it. With their help we are able to ensure most of our children start the school day on time and with a full tummy. Added to this, the Club gives the opportunity for children to talk to adults if they need to, and at times problems arising the night before at home can be unpicked and sorted out prior to the start of the school day. It is, without a doubt, one of the best things I have ever had for my school.” Anne Elford, Headteacher, Windsor Community School, Liverpool.

Magic Breakfast

There you have it two incredible charities that are in need of our support, to enable them to support and feed vulnerable children and families in the UK.

Christmas comes but once a year and this year our children need all the joy we can possibly bring them.  Enter interior stylist Fi Campos who shares how to bring all the fun, playfulness and colour into our children’s bedrooms, making 2020 the best one yet.

I’m an avid believer in bold and beautiful interior schemes for children, and to me, Christmas is just the perfect time of year to indulge in a little colourful creativity.

If you’re also a lover of all things merry and bright, read on for some small scale, easy-to-implement projects that can turn your little one’s space into a fabulously festive kingdom in minutes.

First up: For the ultimate in trend led Christmas tropical vibes, pick a palette of hot pink, mustard, teal and lime and have fun with texture and shapes. A strong navy wall creates a striking contrast to all the colour and makes it feel a little more grown up.

The aim of the game with this look is to create a riot of colourful juxtapositions, and it’s perfect if you fancy a bit of DIY styling too, with references to arts and craft at the helm. – Create an alternative wall-mounted Christmas tree using a cactus wire memo board like this one, check out ebay for one similar.  Add lights, baubles, and anything else you fancy for a quick and easy wall update!

For an alternative to bunting, create a string of pom poms like this garland by The Little Boys Room.

Pick up cute little felt decorations, or even make your own woollen trinkets, and add them to the string to create decor that’s bespoke to your family.

For a tree option that’s straight out of the box, this cute Pom Pom tree by Chi Chi Moi  is a fabulous modern alternative and totally ties in with the fun Peruvian theme.

For a finishing touch that’s certainly not just for Christmas, try this bohemian llama rug by The Little Boys Room:

A striking way of injecting seasonality into their rooms is by creating original wall art.

For a more tonal Christmas idea, why not try making your own Scandi style tree scape wall mural?

Simply paint some lining paper in a variety of greens and blues, and then once it’s dry, cut out tree shapes et voila; a ready-made design ready to paste!

For a shop bought alternative, try a Christmas tree wall sticker like this one by Chameleon Wall Art.

This is a great double whammy as it creates a fun filled Christmas art project for the little ones, as well as sprucing up any bare walls.

If the great outdoors is their thing, this super cute Fir Tree cushion by indie brand Petit Mushyup is the ideal solution for understated festive touches. Layer with teal and emerald cushions to really make it pop.

It’s no secret that orange has been one of this year’s biggest interior colour trends, and it makes a great alternative to the more classic berry red for festive updates. If you’re the daring type, paint a whole wall with it, pair with soft grey furniture, and tone down with blush, cream and gold for added dreaminess.

This gorgeous woodland themed brush cotton duvet set by The Linen Store is super soft and gives a subtle nod to Christmas, whilst being totally suitable for use all year round.

Another simple way of updating a room with some festive fun is by adding an advent calendar.

This forest scene by Berylune features cute woodland animals hidden behind each number, so it has the added bonus of becoming a pride of place feature piece for the top of a chest of drawers or bedside!

Lighting is a quick and inexpensive way of instantly injecting some Christmas magic into a space.

Fairy lights are always a winner, or to create a fabulous focal point this wooden LED star light by All Things Brighton Beautiful would look great lighting up a room.

Finally, a few words of practical advice for revamping their room for Christmas:

Have fun! If ever there was a time of year to pull out all the theatrical stops, this is it. So if that means creating a starry night sky mural on one wall, or covering the ceiling in fairy lights, embrace the magic of Christmas with confidence!

If going all out is just too much of a commitment, for subtle touches of seasonality, gold fairy lights and Nordic bunting work wonders.

For the colour shy among us, try sticking to a classic Christmas palette, for example red white and silver, and mix up the prints for a modern touch.

Whether you choose Nordic simplicity, fun tropical vibes, or Classic woodland schemes, there most certainly is a theme for all tastes out there.

Have fun creating the magic of Christmas!

Happy styling,

Fi x
