Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

One family, two rooms, with the aim of keeping a touch of South Africa Part 2

This family needed a wonderful nursery for their baby girls.  They’d moved from Cape Town to England with two daughters and a baby due in a few weeks.  PIA Design to the rescue and they create two fantastic rooms just in time for babies arrival.

Our clients are from Cape Town, South Africa, and wanted their home to be inspired by the textures and colours of their home – they were also interested in designing sustainably, so we looked at natural materials like cork and 100% natural fibre fabrics and started by using the furniture the client already owned.

This gorgeous riverside property was in fantastic condition having been refurbished with a minimal colour palette not too long before our clients moved in, but the client felt the rooms could be re-decorated to add some interest and personality to suit their own taste.

As the family already live in the house with their two young girls and new-born, we tackled the design a few rooms at a time. We started with the design of the little girls’ room and nursery, which were finished just weeks before the baby arrived. Here’s the Nursery, you can see the girl’s shared bedroom in Part 1 here.

Our brief was to design a gender-neutral room for the baby that had a calming and light atmosphere. We often start brainstorming a project by looking for inspiration on furniture websites that we love, in our design library for wallpaper and fabric samples, and Pinterest for scheme ideas. We were seeing a lot of jungle themed rooms which we thought could be fun but did not quite line with the client’s vision of the room. We pitched scheme ideas in warm and neutral colour schemes that paired well with the client’s existing rattan cot and nursing chair.

The nursery was heavily inspired by the colours, textures and materials associated with South Africa, where our clients are from. We started by creating mood boards featuring fabric, wallpaper, and hard finish samples such as grass cloth wallpapers, natural cork panelling and thick, textured fabrics in rustic tones. This helped us create a tactile and organic impression of what the room would feel like. The client really loved our suggestions, and it was a mutual agreement that we would select samples for this room that had a soft and warm vibe, with lighter wood tones and layered soft furnishings.

The scheme generally came together easily, we did have some back and forth about wallpaper options to use on the feature wall behind the cot. We tried a few fun prints from Cole & Son as well as geometric printed patterns; these felt too flat for the look we were trying to achieve. It was not until we began trying textured wallpapers that we felt we were on the right track. In the end, a stunning woven chevron wallcovering from Arte was the right solution that the client loved. We trial and error these design changes by editing visuals of the rooms that we create in Photoshop and sharing wallpaper samples with the client to approve. This process makes testing lots of options very quick, the end result is exactly how the visual suggests.

To make the storage in this room adapt with the new baby as they grew, we suggested bespoke joinery that we could design the internals of, rather than an off the shelf product. We discussed all of the storage requirements to make sure we were designing exactly what the client wanted. By incorporating adjustable shelves and hanging rails into the design, the these can be moved when clothing requirements change over time. The gold leaf and whitewashed cork panels we had inserted into the shaker frames of the wardrobe doors add a touch of timeless luxury that should stand the test of time and adapt with any changes made to the room scheme over time. Anthropologie leather and brass handles added an extra touch of luxury to the beautiful wardrobe.

For the window dressings, we used a layered approach of over-length linen curtains with a subtle chevron pattern, as well as a blackout roman blind with a black and white embroidered motif for contrast. As well as being a beautiful design feature that felt luxurious and comforting, it was practical in blocking out as much light as possible to make sure the baby could sleep as soundly as possible!

We didn’t want the room to feel too refined and neutral (it’s a kids room after all!), so we popped in some fun accents like the African animal prints on the wall and the funky Pooky floor lamp with a contrasting black and white pleated shade. We added some natural textured accessories with the elephant head wall hanging, rattan mirror, seagrass storage baskets and leather footstool.

We have since worked on other rooms for this family’s home and their feedback from spending more time in the Nursery is that it’s become a popular room to come together and relax on the giant sheepskin rug!

When we were signed on to the project we had an 8 week deadline to work to before the clients baby was due, we wanted to make sure the room was finished and ready by this time. This offered some challenges with fabric and wallpaper lead times, coordinating the joinery and decorating works to finish on time, and of course enough time to go through design changes. However, it all came together nicely in the end and the client loved the soft nature of the room with natural accents that reminded them of their home in South Africa, the light and warm atmosphere of the room has a calming effect.

PIA Design’s objective is to interpret the style preferences of each client and develop something tailored to them. As a result all projects take on their own, unique direction, but there is also a common thread that underlies each one, apparent in the use of natural  materials – wood, stone, cork, metal etc, that can be used to add texture, but also colour to a scheme before simply specifying paint.

A love of nature is at the heart of PIA’s designs and her philosophy is that the best form of sustainability is a carefully considered scheme and the use of quality materials – natural materials have a timeless quality about them that surpasses trends whilst also standing the test of time: some materials even grow more beautiful with age.

Perfect Pink Girls Bedroom For Two

One family, two rooms, with the aim of keeping a touch of South Africa Part 1

The perfect pink girls bedroom for two after you’ve moved from Cape Town to England, with a baby due in a few weeks.

PIA Design to the rescue and they create two fantastic rooms just in time for babies arrival.

This gorgeous riverside property was in fantastic condition having been refurbished with a minimal colour palette not too long before our clients moved in, but the client felt the rooms could be re-decorated to add some interest and personality to suit their own taste.

Our clients are from Cape Town, South Africa, and wanted their home to be inspired by the textures and colours of their home – they were also interested in designing sustainably, so we looked at natural materials like cork and 100% natural fibre fabrics and started by using the furniture the client already owned.

As the family already live in the house with their two young girls and new-born, we tackled the design a few rooms at a time. We started with the design of the little girls’ room and nursery, which were finished just weeks before the baby arrived. Here’s the Girls room, Part 2 will follow soon.

For the girl’s room we used subtle colours and plenty of texture to give the room a nature-inspired uplift – and schemes that can easily adapt and evolve as the children grow up. The client wanted the girl’s room to feel restful as well as fun, with spaces for the girls to play and work.

We began the design for this perfect pink girls bedroom by bringing together fabric and wallpaper samples, we wanted to create a room that had a soft and subtle base. This could then adapt easily to furniture and accessory changes as the girls grew and as their interests change over time. We were drawn to dusty pink shades, greys, beiges, and warm wooden tones for this room as they’re easy neutrals that can pair well with other colours.

Behind the twin beds we chose a feature wall using a pink distressed design wallpaper from Elitis, the pattern of which is a subtle nod to the South African inspired mood board we put together for the room schemes. The carpet in this room also needed changing as we had to remove some existing joinery from the house’s original owners that had left indents in the existing carpets. In keeping with the blush tones of the room, we selected a warm beige carpet with a slight rosy hue.

We had initially discussed designing some bespoke bunk beds for the girls bedroom as a fun feature piece of joinery. We ran into challenges with the sloped ceiling not allowing a lot of room for the top bunk. As well as this, we worked with our joiner to make sure everything was structurally sound, which resulted in some of our design choices being compromised. In the end it was agreed with the client that two double beds were a smarter choice and helped to future proof the room as the girls grew up. Looking back, it was the right choice to make as the final result has a more refined atmosphere.

We designed bespoke wardrobes for this room with ample storage space that had adjustable shelves and hanging rails that would make the wardrobes adapt with the girl’s storage needs as they grew older. The whitewashed oak shaker doors of the wardrobes feature beautiful gold leaf embellished cork panels, and we added an extra touch of luxury with some leather and brass handles from Anthropologie.

Our original design for the joinery in this room had less wardrobe space and a double desk for the girls to work at together. After reviewing this with the client, it was agreed that the girls would need more storage space and that separate desks would mean homework could be completed much more efficiently! We had bespoke fitted desks fitted into the rooms by the windows. On our site visits to discuss the designs with the clients we noticed both girls enjoyed colouring and so we made sure each desk was fitted with custom cork panels wrapped in De Le Cuona fabric for the girls to pin up their artistic creations.

There was not enough space either side of the window in this room to have full length curtains so we picked a beautiful fabric from Christopher Farr to have bespoke roman blinds made. To add a bit of extra luxury to the blinds, we opted for a wide trim around the edges in a stunning De Le Cuona fabric.

The client had beautiful, framed prints by Mrs Mighetto that we wanted to display in this room, they fit nicely above the beds and we had space in the centre for another piece of artwork. We asked the girls what other accessories they would like in their new room; they loved the grass woven elephant head we had chosen for the nursery (to be revealed here soon) so we found a similar product from Maisons Du Monde which completed the wall nicely.

We specified a sheepskin rug in this room as it proved to be a popular choice in the nursery! The collection of decorative cushions and throws we sourced from John Lewis and gave the beds an extra cosy vibe. We paired the rattan bedside tables with some art deco style table lamps for a contrast between natural elements and contemporary luxury.

Compared to the Nursery, this perfect pink girls bedroom was slightly more challenging to coordinate as it was larger and required the additional time needed to remove and install new carpets. But it came together just as easily with all the thorough planning we did, and the end result is something we are really proud of. It’s a room that will stand the test of time and always have a good balance between fun and neutral. The girls enjoy having a bedroom together, their own grown-up beds and desk spaces of their own which have been used for many artistic endeavours since!

Part 2 – The Nursery, to follow in a few weeks.

Rooomy’s Top 5 Walls for Sustainability,

for kid’s rooms and the family home

Looking for sustainable wallpaper is really easy now.  It is tough to find a company that don’t print on paper that comes from an FSC or PEFC certified sustainable forest, toxic paints are scarcely used the any decent wallpaper paste will be solvent free, so it’s just down to you to buy the good paste.

Aimee Wilder – Star Tiger

If you child loves big cats and is also a funky kid then this design it for them and better yet the colour options means there is something to suite the outlandish with the neon pink or yellow, then there’s the muted blue, grey and brown for the more introverted personas and finally a stylish monochrome which always allows for pop of colour through out the room is you wish.  If you were feeling adventurous you could mix and match!  With the calm yet stern stare of the tiger, coupled with a starred eye nod to bowie, this paper will last for years as it works for all ages.

Little Greene

Oh, this design has it all.  Stars, flowers, colour, a sense of rainbow style it’s great!  It is available in three other colour ways all with a nod to the 60’s but unless your kid is into serious vintage the heavy yellows, browns and red might not be the vibe they’re looking for.  However the peacock colour way is a joyful finish, bringing the outside in, the playful movement of the pattern and something to bring joy to the soul.

The paper used in Little Greene wallpapers comes from FSC or PEFC certificated sustainable forests; so for every tree used another four are planted. The pigments used to print them are completely non-toxic and their excellent wallpaper paste contains no solvent.

Arthouse Ltd – Hidden Jungle

All the detail, design, colours, layering and gorgeousness you could ask for, all wrapped up in this hidden jungle design.  A wonderful way to inspire children to care about the planet is to surround them with the parts of the world they don’t get to experience.  Build their passion to these animals in the wild one day and they will be on board with conservation and sustainability for sure.

Wonderfully versatile, you can hang this paper in a living room, bedroom, playroom or cloakroom – on all four walls for a dramatic look or on a feature wall. Suitable for most rooms except high moisture environments

Spoonflower – Katherine Quinn’s Whale Song

Whenever I research wallpaper I always pick a dark option as I think it is a stunning , striking and a brave way to decorate.  I am also conscious that as well as choosing FSC certified papers I’ve continued along the jungle theme in the hope of prompting children to think about the environment.  Of course, not all children are fans of land animals and some have a huge affinity with the wonders of our deep and vast oceans.  Kathrine Quinn has captured this beautifully in her design, I think we can tell she’s from New Zealand as she portrays many whales as well as sting rays, sea horses and plenty of fish.  A wonderful bold wall in any child’s bedroom whatever their age!

Rebel Walls – Mischievous Tigers

Enjoy the confident and superior movements of one of the world’s most graceful animals – the tiger.  If the previous jungle design was too colourful for you and maybe you’re looking for a more realistic foliage design still incorporating the animal aspect, then this design is the one for you. They are up to all sorts in this design, weaving in and out of the leaves bringing a playfulness to the feel which is just what you want for your kids room.

All of Rebel Walls wallpapers are printed on a non-woven paper reinforced with nylon fibres that create no VOC (Volatile organic compound) in room temperature. They print with all-natural non-toxic colour compounds that produce no VOC and our paste is made from modified potato starch that is also non-toxic.

Rooomy’s best sustainable accessories for kids

and the family home

Whether you’re redecorating or simply looking to update your kid’s space, accessories are where you can have a lot of fun with stylish or playful items that can bring some true character and personality to your child’s bedroom.  With sustainability at the core of this issue when you’re looking for new ideas think about the kinds of materials to introduce bamboo, cork, rattan, straw, clay to name a few basics.

Bamboo lampshades

Bamboo is a gorgeous material, the colour alone being light yet warm bring a lovely feel to any interior.  There are bamboo chairs and beds but as an accessory a simple light fitting can make all the difference and lighting a key accessory that is often over looked in interiors.  So much time is spent on the colour palete and key elements of furniture, flooring and window dressings etc.  Lighting is neglected but if you start to notice how a room is lit you’ll soon see how it can detract from a great space or enhance it brilliantly.

Bamboo Clock

Another bamboo feature and there are lots out there, I felt this clock would appeal to all ages as the big numbers are great for those kid’s starting to get their head round the whole telling the time gig, yet it’s stylish enough to not look out of place and kid like in a teens space, another note on sustainability is to buy items that will last, not buying a clock that will only last two years because it’s covered in paw patrol but a piece that can just be present for all the time it’s needed.

Hello Rustle Lion Head

As a Leo I am a fan of all things lions and was very happy to come across Hello Rustle on Instagram recently.  Using air drying clay and raffia these little lion creations come in a huge variety of finishes and are made to order so you can have a chat with Ryan about that you need.  Check out his Instagram feed to see all different colours of faces or manes.  You could have a lot of fun here choosing what would look best, better yet show the idea to your kid and ask them what they’d like their lion to look like.  It’s really wonderful for children when they can get involved in the decision making and take some ownership and pride in their room.  Ryan is in such demand that he opens sales when he can so you need to follow him and then when he’s open you simply message him, make sure you’re in with a chance of placing your order.  I think I need to get myself one of these, the problem will be deciding on what colour!

My Rooga

Cork Rugs

As seen in Chloe Spillett’s feature the cork rug!  Aren’t these a fab idea?  This circular rug will add a sprinkle of magic to your kids room. Let the kids climb the mountains, sail the boats and reach the stars… The warm tone of the cork and the classic design ensures it will blend naturally into any space and is available in two sizes

I had never heard of a cork rug until Chloe wrote her feature.  Silly really as I used to have cork placemats which I bought in Portugal years ago.  But a matt/rug for the kids room, too thin to trip over, easy to clean and even easier to move about, fun, stylish and smart.

Eco Birdy

Rhino Lamp

Eco Birdy continue to be one of the best solutions to the problem that is kids plastic!  Do you worry about plastic toys? Do you recycle? Are you concerned about what will happen to your kid’s toys when they are no longer played with?  It’s great to hand things down, donate to the local charity shop or make a bit of cash back at a boot fair or on Facebay, BUT eventually they need to go somewhere and where? Think on Toy Story 3, where does a toys life end up?

Well Eco Birdy have solved this by creating four wonderful products for kids to enjoy, made entirely of recycled plastic from kid’s toys, accessories like scooters, ride along cars and more.  Their products include a kiwi toy storage unit, a chair, a rhino lamp and a table.

They collect unwanted toys from schools, remove all metal elements from each product, and clean everything, the plastic is then batched into similar colours and melted down. It is then moulded into one of their four designs resulting with a fun mottled affect with rounded edges and a smooth silky surface making the furniture pleasant to the touch and easy to clean.  The outstanding results are a sustainable and environmentally friendly product for your child’s room that is made of 100% recycled plastic, looks great, has a function and is fully recyclable.

Rooomy’s best sustainable finds for parents, that kids will love

In each issue of the magazine we have the Rooomy Loves feature.  My chance to share with you some brilliant finds which I think other parents will love, which are not related to your child’s bedroom.  Something for the home, a great gift maybe, a great book find or possibly something silly but fab.

Leave Nothing but Footprints

I bought this book because I love the illustrator.  She’s worked on other kids books and her art work is gorgeous.  The book has a clear message about looking after our environment particularly the oceans and seas.  For us it was reaffirming that we are doing the right things already, we always take our rubbish home and don’t leave anything on the beach, in fact as long as hygiene isn’t an issue we often put other peoples rubbish in the bin, the girls are happy to do this.  It was a great reminder that using less plastic bags is important and something we have become much better at in recent months, one of the few bonuses of lockdown.  The girls were heart broken at the prospect of saying no to glitter, but it’s prompted me to research the why some more for them, I guess this is the key to sustainability with our kid’s it’s all about educating them.  Telling what they must and must not do it simply not good enough, we need help the understand why our actions are important and the impact we have when we don’t act.  This will cement their understanding and commitment and hopefully be less likely to be led astray by peer who litter when they’re older, they can set the example and be passionate about their reasons why.  Education, strength, conviction.

Corkando Placemats

Whilst on the hunt for cork rugs I came across these glorious placemats.  With 7 lovely illustrated designs to choose from you’ll be able to make your dinner time setting a truly joyful place to be.  Lovingly designed with great motifs from a sustainable material. The cork table sets are non-slip and easy to care for. So your table always stays clean and the food is even more fun!

Bamboo Calculator

The number one reason for the Rooomy Loves feature is because when I am researching kids rooms I always stumble upon products that I don’t think would have ever crossed my path otherwise.  This Bamboo Calculator is a perfect example of just that.  Had you ever heard of one? Well if you are looking to introduce more natural products and less plastic then this is a must have!  Bamboo offers such a great colour and the chunky buttons are fab for all ages and it is of course solar powered!
