Rooomy’s Top 5 Walls for Sustainability,

for kid’s rooms and the family home

Looking for sustainable wallpaper is really easy now.  It is tough to find a company that don’t print on paper that comes from an FSC or PEFC certified sustainable forest, toxic paints are scarcely used the any decent wallpaper paste will be solvent free, so it’s just down to you to buy the good paste.

Aimee Wilder – Star Tiger

If you child loves big cats and is also a funky kid then this design it for them and better yet the colour options means there is something to suite the outlandish with the neon pink or yellow, then there’s the muted blue, grey and brown for the more introverted personas and finally a stylish monochrome which always allows for pop of colour through out the room is you wish.  If you were feeling adventurous you could mix and match!  With the calm yet stern stare of the tiger, coupled with a starred eye nod to bowie, this paper will last for years as it works for all ages.

Little Greene

Oh, this design has it all.  Stars, flowers, colour, a sense of rainbow style it’s great!  It is available in three other colour ways all with a nod to the 60’s but unless your kid is into serious vintage the heavy yellows, browns and red might not be the vibe they’re looking for.  However the peacock colour way is a joyful finish, bringing the outside in, the playful movement of the pattern and something to bring joy to the soul.

The paper used in Little Greene wallpapers comes from FSC or PEFC certificated sustainable forests; so for every tree used another four are planted. The pigments used to print them are completely non-toxic and their excellent wallpaper paste contains no solvent.

Arthouse Ltd – Hidden Jungle

All the detail, design, colours, layering and gorgeousness you could ask for, all wrapped up in this hidden jungle design.  A wonderful way to inspire children to care about the planet is to surround them with the parts of the world they don’t get to experience.  Build their passion to these animals in the wild one day and they will be on board with conservation and sustainability for sure.

Wonderfully versatile, you can hang this paper in a living room, bedroom, playroom or cloakroom – on all four walls for a dramatic look or on a feature wall. Suitable for most rooms except high moisture environments

Spoonflower – Katherine Quinn’s Whale Song

Whenever I research wallpaper I always pick a dark option as I think it is a stunning , striking and a brave way to decorate.  I am also conscious that as well as choosing FSC certified papers I’ve continued along the jungle theme in the hope of prompting children to think about the environment.  Of course, not all children are fans of land animals and some have a huge affinity with the wonders of our deep and vast oceans.  Kathrine Quinn has captured this beautifully in her design, I think we can tell she’s from New Zealand as she portrays many whales as well as sting rays, sea horses and plenty of fish.  A wonderful bold wall in any child’s bedroom whatever their age!

Rebel Walls – Mischievous Tigers

Enjoy the confident and superior movements of one of the world’s most graceful animals – the tiger.  If the previous jungle design was too colourful for you and maybe you’re looking for a more realistic foliage design still incorporating the animal aspect, then this design is the one for you. They are up to all sorts in this design, weaving in and out of the leaves bringing a playfulness to the feel which is just what you want for your kids room.

All of Rebel Walls wallpapers are printed on a non-woven paper reinforced with nylon fibres that create no VOC (Volatile organic compound) in room temperature. They print with all-natural non-toxic colour compounds that produce no VOC and our paste is made from modified potato starch that is also non-toxic.

My 1st Room – Nursery Trends

My 1st Room – Nursery Trends

My 1st Room – Nursery Trends

My 1st Room

Jo Riding Owner of Mini Maison shares the

lowdown on the latest nursery trends.

Decorating your baby’s nursery is one of the most special things you can do when you’re pregnant. Commonly referred to as nesting, the idea of creating a unique space for your precious baby allows for further bonding with your unborn child. Whether you’re decorating their very own nursery, redesigning what will be a shared bedroom or creating a special nook in the corner of your bedroom, this is something that you can really enjoy during your pregnancy. Plus, you need to make the most of being able to decorate your child’s bedroom in your own taste, before they get bigger and start demanding Paw Patrol!

Things have changed hugely in nursery interiors over the past few years – some trends come and go, while others remain massively popular, but just reimagined. We are long past the days of pink is for girls and blue is for boys with parents becoming more imaginative with their nursery colour… even the once popular and gender-neutral ‘grey’ being replaced with warmer tones of sand and beige.

RAINBOWS REVISITED

Rainbows have had a revamp… no longer are they resigned to just being ‘brights’ (although the original is just as popular), pastel shades and muted tones have increased in popularity in recent years.

By using muted tones (think beige, peach and tan) you’re instantly creating a calm, warm and inviting space giving instant boho vibes to the room. Whether you choose to go for a bold rainbow mural or small touches such as wall stickers and other decorative items, a rainbow theme will last well into older childhood.

NATURAL VIBES

You’ll notice that many of the trends that come up are very much interlinked and feed off one another. Bringing nature indoors is something we are seeing across all of the interiors world. From small, delicate botanical details to larger and bolder tropical prints we are seeing leaves and flowers on walls, bedding, changing mats and prints / stickers for the nursery wall. Pair all of that with some real or faux plants and you’ve got a fresh and vibrant space for your baby to develop. Of course, by natural we don’t just mean plants and flowers, even nursery furniture is upping its natural credentials, with cane cribs and rattan side tables becoming ever popular.

DARK DÉCOR

Creating a dark and cosy space for your baby is an excellent idea if you want to create a restful and peaceful nursery and aren’t afraid of colour. If you think about it, it’s the perfect tone for a baby that’s just arrived Earthside. Keep the accessories simple and let the room envelope you and your baby in for those special moments.  We’ve seen dark blues or even black walls paired with stunning gold cots and gold stars above the crib for a contemporary look or with brass accessories, teak furniture and a Persian rug for a more mid-century feel finally you could pair your dark walls with oversize florals to add a feminine, softer touch to the space.

FIVE WALLS

A nursery is a brilliant space to try out some of the newer paint designs and decorating techniques we are seeing across social media. Colour blocking is the phrase ‘du jour’ and it basically just means using paint to create a pattern on your wall. What started off as trend for changing the colour of a room halfway across a wall, either vertically or horizontally has seen creative homeowners take things one step further with scalloped edges or semi circles behind the cot or even painting the ceiling (the fifth wall!). And the best thing about this trend is that it’s cheap to do and easy to change if you decide it’s not for you, because let’s be honest, having a baby is a pretty expensive time of your life (hello ‘travel system’ that cost more than my first car!). Another DIY trend that’s popular in nurseries is panelling, usually behind the cot, creating a bold feature to the room. Traditional squares of panels are most popular but we’re also seeing incredible designs using thinner strips of wood in more geometric patterns. Pair it with a large wooden or neon sign and you’ve got yourself a Pinterest sensation!

Chloe Spillet, new Style Editor for Rooomy Magazine

ANIMAL ASSEMBLY

Of course, imagery of animals never went out of style for a nursery; cute animal pictures that will delight your baby have always been in fashion but we aren’t just talking about a simple elephant art print on the wall anymore – we’ve got woodland animals displayed in elaborate painted murals and safari animals hidden amongst oversize jungle leaves. Creating a themed animal nursery is hugely popular at the moment and with more on trend products available from a whole range of retailers, it’s a fantastic opportunity to really use your imagination and think about every single aspect of the design, curating your baby’s nursery. Animal heads on the wall are popular, with a range of different designs – fun soft, fluffy and realistic looking or handmade from felt for a more childish feel or even from origami for a contemporary nursery.

Eleanor Bowmer – Nursery

Teddy’s Nursery And More

Rooomy talks to Eleanor Bowmer about nursery planning

and becoming a creative legend

Eleanor Bowmer is a Textile Design and Illustrator based in Manchester. Mum to Norie and baby Teddy and of course Frank her French Bulldog. Eleanor went freelance 5 years ago and her rainbow and tiger adorning empire has grown from there, with recent product launches in John Lewis and Partners! With the arrival of baby Teddy and the Nursery Edition coming up I had to take this great opportunity to pick Eleanor’s brain about the Nursery and how she pulled it all together.

“My dreams and goals are getting bigger all the time. I’ve always been a very ambitious person,

sometimes it doesn’t pay off but when it does the feeling is amazing!”

RB – When/How did you get into art and design?

EB – I studied art and design at college followed by a foundation course in Art and a degree in Textile Design. My dad was an artist in his 20’s and taught Art at degree level so it’s in the family.

RB – When you began designing is this where you imagined yourself?

EB – That’s a hard question to answer actually. I dreamt of it, but I didn’t ever think it would happen. I didn’t know how to make it happen. My dreams and goals are getting bigger all the time. I’ve always been a very ambitious person, sometimes it doesn’t pay off but when it does the feeling is amazing!

RB – What have the last few years has been like going from designing cards and prints with Frank on your lap, to having your own studio and seeing your first mug collection being displayed on the shelves of John Lewis and Partner?

EB – The last year in particular has been a whirlwind mixture of excitement and being terrified. Until I saw them on the shelves in JL myself I wouldn’t believe it. It’s been a big year of decision making and risk taking, so far it seems to have paid off. It really has been incredible.

RB – Last year you launched your first wallpaper collection for kids. Had this always been a plan of yours or did this come from customer demand?

EB – No, nobody was asking me for wallpaper. I wanted some cool wallpaper for my daughter’s room so I thought I’d design some.  Thankfully it’s been a big hit! I’m a trained wallpaper designer which is where I started, it hasn’t come from nowhere!

Chloe Spillet, new Style Editor for Rooomy Magazine
Chloe Spillet, new Style Editor for Rooomy Magazine

RB – When you designed Teddy’s nursery where did you begin? What led the design?

EB – My own head! I had my wallpaper in mind and then went with colours I love. I like an eclectic mix but thoughtfully put together. It isn’t quite there yet but almost!

RB – Do you mood board or do you start with the first piece of inspiration and take it from there?

EB – I always have a bank of images and artists I love as inspiration.

RB – You have a second kids wallpaper collection out now, was this always the plan or did it simply happen because you needed a design for Teddy’s room?

EB – A bit of both!

RB – As Teddy’s was your second nursery to create, did you learn anything from the first one that you did differently?

EB – Well they’re both different gender which is great so I really got the chance to explore different colours with both. I was really happy with Norie’s room, so I just went with gut this time too!

RB – What are your three must haves for a New-born?

EB – Patience, routine and faith that it will pass, or do you mean products? haha. Top 3 products would be a Ewan the dream sheep, a cosy blanket and plenty of muslins.

“Go with what you love and it will all come together perfectly.

If in doubt, don’t be too fussy with prints – keep it simple and bold”

RB – What advice would you give first time parents when it comes to sorting out their nursery?

EB – Start with a colour palette and build on it. Go with what you love and it will all come together perfectly. If in doubt, don’t be too fussy with prints – keep it simple and bold.

RB – For your stunning nature and animal inspired designs – who or what inspires you most?

EB – I love botanical art, which I know is quite a stark contrast to my designs, but I honestly love the detail and am so in awe of the realism!

RB – Apart from your wallpaper, what is your favourite thing about Ted’s room?

EB – His cot! It was Norie’s and was from Cottage Toys. Expensive but worth it!

RB – If money was no object what would you buy for your nursery?

EB – A machine/robot of some sort to do the night feeds!

RB – Yes, good idea!

Otis’ Nursery – Jungle Theme

Otis’ Nursery – Jungle Theme

Otis’ Nursery – Jungle Theme

Call of the Wild

Rooomy asks Amanda Cotton about creating

an animal theme nursery for the arrival of little Otis

RB – When you suspected or found out you were pregnant, and you’re becoming a mum for the first time, roughly how much time do you think passed before you were thinking about what would be happening in the nursery?

AC – We had IVF to have Otis so the dream of having a child of our own was something we had wanted for a long time. I started planning his nursery soon after the 20-week scan, when things started to feel more real.

RB – Where did the jungle theme idea come from?

AC – There’s a hotel in LA called the Beverly Hills Hotel which has this amazing palm printed wallpaper. I’m a bit of a wallpaper addict, so when I found one similar from Milton and King I just thought this could really work as a jungle theme. Plus, we love animals, and hope this rubs off on Otis.

I always think nurseries/kids’ rooms work well when they have a theme, or something to centre the look around- whether that’s a theme, or a big piece of furniture. It also helps with baby shower gifts..ha!

Jungle Themed Wallpaper, Gender Neutral Nursery Ideas, Leaf Print Wallpaper

RB – Once you had the theme sorted, how did you develop your ideas? Any tips for mums to be?

AC – I wanted the cot and changing table to stand out from the white panelling in Otis’ room, so I opted for a Stokke hazy Grey Sleepi cot and dresser with changing top. I love the Stokke range, as its very much designed to see your baby through their childhood years and isn’t just for babies. The Sleepi cot can be extended when Otis is bigger and the centre panel can come out, so he can get in and out himself when he’s big enough. I’m all about keeping the cost down in the long run.

My tips for mums to be would be… Choose the cot and the changing table first. The cot is usually the centre point to a nursery, but by adding a large soft toy, canopy or painted dresser you can change the focal point.

Having a theme helps to narrow the focus on wallpapers and accessories. I went with a jungle/ safari theme for Otis’ nursery.

Babies love colour and pattern, so be creative with the décor and have fun with it.

RB – How old will Otis need to be for you to allow him to choose his own décor?

AC – Ha! That’s a good question. We will see. I’m sure I’ll eventually give in and let him choose comic book bedding and matching wallpaper, but for now I’ll enjoy making the big decisions.

Leaf Print Wallpaper, Jungle Themed Nursery, Gender Neutral Nursery Design

RB – If Money was no object, on the market now, what have you seen out there that you would love to buy for his room?

AC – I have just seen that Pottery barn kids have launched in the UK, and they have a collaboration range with West Elm where they created a cot and changing table in their signature mid century design. They also have a cream cot with brass legs and a honey comb texture on the sides. It all very dreamy.

They also have a lovely elephant rocking horse that I’ve got my eye on- plus it fits perfectly with his jungle theme.

RB – What would you advise new parents to really invest in for their nursery?

AC – I’d invest in a cot which has a moveable base, and I’ve also found our changing table essential. Don’t under estimate the luxury of changing your baby while standing up, especially if you suffer from back ache. I would also recommend getting a comfy chair for nursing/feeding. Otis has only just moved into his room, but we sit here every evening reading a book and having a bottle before bed.

RB – What are the Zebra, Lion and Elephant called?

AC – The Zebra is called Brian, the lion is called George and the Elephant is called Simon (and the giraffe is called Geraldine). The heads are all from the fabulous Fiona Walker.

Leaf Print Wallpaper, Jungle Themed Nursery, Gender Neutral Nursery Design

RB – What are your three favourite items in the Otis’ room?

AC – The giraffe! Our lovely neighbours bought this for Otis after he was born. It’s by Melissa and Doug which you can buy from Argos. He really makes a statement in here.
The green velvet chair (from homesense). Being velvet isn’t essential, but I love its vibrancy in colour. We had this chair in our bedroom before I found out I was pregnant and it just fitted perfectly in here. It’s also essential for Otis’ bedtime routine of book and bottle.
(A little fact I’ve discovered- wet wipes can clean most things and have been really handy getting any milk spills off the velvet.)
The huge rug (From La Redoute). The rug covers most of the floor in Otis’ room which is brilliant now he loves to roll and do plenty of tummy time. It was my husband’s idea to get a big rug as we have wooden floors throughout our house and I’m so pleased we did.

RB – What has surprised you most about yourself on becoming a mum?

AC – How bloody hard it is. I think I was a bit delusional and had all these preconceived ideas of starting a business on maternity leave, or at least having loads of time to write my blog. The truth is I have less free time now. I’m always hearing about these super mums who start-up businesses on their year off. I have no idea how they do it? I have massive admiration for full time, stay at home mums now.

Leaf Print Wallpaper, Jungle Themed Nursery, Gender Neutral Nursery Design

RB – Otis’ nursery is incredible, he is going to love moving in their soon. To the onlooker it is perfection, but we all know for the creator that’s not always the case. Is there anything you’d do differently?

AC – Otis has been sleeping in his room for the past week now, and is doing 10-12 hours a night. Although, naps are whole different story.

I want to fit blackout blinds between the shutters and the windows but its currently proving difficult as there isn’t enough space between the sash window frame and shutter. This is something I would definitely consider for next time. Shutters look great, but they just not as practical as good black out curtains or blinds. Hence the day nap problems…

RB – What do you enjoy most about being Otis’ mum?

AC – I really can’t choose one thing. It’s an amazing feeling being Otis’ mummy. Just seeing his smile, and making him laugh is the best feeling in the world. Before I had Otis, I lived a fast-paced lifestyle. He’s taught me to slow down and appreciate everything for the first time again.

If you love this nursery and Amanda’s wonderful maximalist style then you’ll want to follow her latest project, coined “The Rat House”, what will she create for Otis next?  Check out her progress here on Instagram.  If you want to see more great nursery inspiration subscribe here for the Nursery Edit.

Ava’s Nursery

Ava’s Nursery

Ava’s Nursery

The Nursery Where it all Began

A peek into the nursery that inspired Rooomy Magazine

Ava’s room is where it all started.  When I decorated Ava’s nursery I had no idea I would be eventually share it on social media and on my website for kid’s interiors, as Rooomy didn’t exist. Therefore, I didn’t take many pictures and the ones I did are not great. However, it doesn’t matter. The whole point of Rooomy is to help parents like me, to create the rooms you want for your children. There are no rights or wrongs, just what you enjoy and feel great in. The professionals provide incredible inspiration and advice, I’m confident they would look at Ava’s nursery and see too much white space. It doesn’t matter, I remember us loving this space, it felt clean, fresh, calm and wonderful. We spent so much time sat on the floor cooing over her and beaming. I have learnt a lot working on Rooomy and would do things a little differently, I certainly would have bought a rug to protect the carpet, but I have zero regrets and heaps of fond memories.

2012, I’m pregnant with baby No1 (due in April) and we are not going to find out the sex, this of course plays a big role in planning. I started looking at furniture and I knew right away that I wanted a dark walnut cotbed, I think I was obsessed with this at the time as I longed for a dark wood kitchen (still on my wish list), and there were a few great ones on the market, Tutti Bambini, Silver Cross and Izziwotnot were my favourites. Heart fixed on this I was happy to then paint the room white as not imaginative or brave enough to consider something else with such a dark cotbed.

Ok, dark walnut cotbed, check. Now to plan the rest of the room. Back in 2011/12 I was also heavily into One Tree Hill, there I said it, no shame here, lol! In one of the later series a nursery is featured which was a heavily dressed and styled work of art, of course, however there was a tree mural in pink that I loved (not the pink part) and I figured it was not beyond my painting abilities to have a go at re-creating it and I decided to go for yellow.

This got me thinking about what else I could have a go at. I then went bonkers and decided that a mural of Safari animals would be a good idea, I knew my skills weren’t up to painting their whole bodies, keeping it all to scale and creating some sort of setting for them, so what do I do? I cheat of course! I decide that it can be a corner mural and the animals can be coming out from behind a tree, then I only need to draw their fronts. I also know I can’t create from my own imagination, but I can do a decent enough copy, so I Google images and find the inspiration I need, got to love Google.

Jungle Themed Nursery, Gender Neutral Nursery Design
Wall Mural, Jungle Themed Nursery, Gender Neutral Nursery Design

The mural was an epic project for me and my husband thought I was a bit bonkers but as the room came together he was inspired too and decided to have a go at putting his own little stamp on the nursery. He copied a few of the animals off the changing matt, he put them around the door frame, but then she arrived and they have never been painted, we now love them that way, hahaha. He is not a “handy-man” therefore I do all the decorating, so it was lovely having time together in the nursery getting it ready together.

Once finished I was thrilled with the mural and time has taught me that I needed to seal it, sadly a lot of the colour has started to fade and what was once a brown tree trunk is now looking a little green in places from sun fade. Live and learn as they say. Now that she’s 5yrs old I think we are approaching a redecorate anyway, watch this space.

The room is a good size and we were very lucky that it came with built in wardrobes, I had them all shelved which made them perfect for baskets of clothes, books, bumper packs of nappies, Calpol, teething granules and all the other baby bumf. As she grew up and I needed drawers for bigger clothes I removed a number of shelves from one of the wardrobes and bought a chest of drawers that fitted the space, when budget allows I would love to have them fully fitted out but for now this does the trick.

The wardrobes allowed for the room to not be too busy so all we had was the Cotbed, toy box, changing table and a feeding chair.

When planning do consider the longevity of the room, will it grow with your baby, I didn’t really think about this at the time but it has worked out ok for me, Ava has gone from Cot Bed to single bed to bunk beds, each time I have asked her if she wants the walls repainted but each time she has said no, I am not allowed to touch her murals, bless her.

Do think long term on expensive items. Furniture mostly. The cotbed never became her bed as her baby sister needed it and it has only just been turned into a bed for the first time, last month. I am also certain that I will be able to sell it on when my youngest has finished with it, make sure you keep all the extra bits and bolts and instructions!!

If you’re asked by anyone if there is anything they can get to help, think about it and accept. Otherwise you end up with lots of presents all being variations on a theme.

The other key purchases of the room were; Silvercross Cotbed, thank you mum and dad and the changing table and matt, thank you mother and father in law.

Feeding chair – I researched so many and decided not to spend a lot of money on such a specific piece of furniture which has only one use. We ended up buying a tiny patchwork kids chair from an antique shop, when it is no longer in the youngest’s room it will be moved to the lounge and stay in the family for ever, I love it very much!

As we had not purchased any new carpet for her room since we’d moved in, 5yrs earlier, we decided to update at last. Carpets don’t do well with Calpol, really sticky stuff. Either don’t splash on the carpet or get a rug is my advice.

Final touches;  I like to get in touch with my inner granny from time to time so I cross stitched the Noah’s Ark above her changing table which later became a big talking point with her.

My awesome sister-in-law painted us a great name feature for the nursery too and she had very sweetly paid attention to the theme of the room and used the animals from the changing matt too.

There you have it, a different post about a nursery as it’s not a tour of a finished space, but it is where the thoughts of Rooomy magazine all started. Do accept help from others, if you know what you want great, if you don’t have fun researching, I hope Rooomy can offer some inspiration. If you are not even thinking about the nursery, do, it helps I promise. Before you start take some pics, before and after photos are very satisfying, plus I want to see them, please send them in.

Jungle Is Massive

This weeks top wallpaper picks, all along the jungle theme

The jungle theme has always been a hit with kid’s rooms and nurseries. Kids stories are full of animals and adventure, making it very easy for us to bring the jungle theme straight into their space with good odds they’re going to love it!

Capricorn Neon – Murals Wallpaper

Do you like the jungle idea but are sick of all the animals and green palms? Maybe your kid loves to be quirky or you have a teen who wants their room to have a bit of edge to it? This neon palm design with the dark background will definitely bring a hit of wow to their bedroom whilst still breathing a touch of nature into their space.

Jungle is Massive – Wild Hearts Wonder

Jungle Massive not only boasts gangsta leopards but also gorillas reading bedtime stories with little teddies!  It’s vibrant, contemporary and totally awesome!  The unisex design is perfect for a child’s bedroom or playroom, and the print is across 2 panels, so the scale is amazing! The design is hand-painted and digitally printed enabling you to see every brush stroke, created to ignite children’s imaginations and encourage a love of nature. With every gaze children will lose themselves in a sense of curiosity, discovery and wonder. Let your little one create their own bedtime tale through this wild and whimsical design.

Jungle Mural – Eleanor Bowmer

Eleanor’s jungle wallpaper shows all the detail of her brush strokes, which won’t fail to inspire artistry and creativity in your child. The colour palette is playful and vibrant and you can see the clear explosion for her love of this theme as she manages to squeeze in plenty of animals and trees and more into this incredibly imaginative design.

Tyger Tyger – Annika Reed

Annika wanted to create something unique for her daughter’s nursery. The colours needed to be soothing and comforting, she did not want cute and twee images, so she got to work on her own design and it was the beginning of a new line of wallpaper designs. The Tyger Tyger design now adorns the nursery which she enjoys spending time in as much as her daughter.
