Everything you need to know about Barker Design,

where the human experience is at the heart of every design

Justine Hodgson-Barker of Barker Design Rooomy Magazine contributor

RB – What do you enjoy most about designing kid’s rooms?

BD – The fun and creative process of it all. But mostly seeing their little faces when you’ve given them a space of their very own, a sanctuary for them to escape that totally different from the rest of the house.

RB – What is your number 1 must when it comes to kid’s rooms?

BD – Other than storage? Zones for work, rest and play!  Something that’s been even more essential during lockdown.

RB – Our readers are always stressing over storage in their kid’s rooms.  What are your top tips?

BD – Give them a room to grow into. Give them a dedicated space for their collections for instance, as this will change. Then, in terms of where to splurge and save, splurge on lighting, hard-wearing flooring and furniture but save on the accessories as these are usually trend led or age specific.

RB – Do you interview your small clients?  How do you involve them in the process? Any key questions you ask them?

BD – Yes absolutely. I mainly keep it visual based as it’s more fun – so I get them to do their own Pinterest page. Then the kind of questions I do ask are all about them and their hobbies.

RB – Do you think there are some discernible differences when approaching the design of a kid’s room compared to the rest of the house?

BD – Yes definitely. Don’t treat the kids rooms with the same design direction as the rest of the house. Whist there should be some cohesiveness –  these rooms should be just as individual as the grown up room. So dial up the fun!

RB – Do you have any rules when it comes to design?

BD – Subject to lockdown, always meeting the client and seeing the property in person. I know there’s a lot of e-design around and I think there’s a big market for that. But we spend so much time in our homes nothing beats the empathy you gain from truly understanding your client and studying the bones of the property, it’s period and it’s location. Makes for a much more fitting and unique design. After all, our homes are an extension and expression of ourselves!

RB – What have been some of your favourite projects.

BD – The huge Decimus Burton Villa that landed me in Living etc (personal career goal!). But mainly the free reign I had with working with that client as she such a real risk taker! And my current project (where we’re just starting phase two of their project) when they declared “just go for it, you know us better than we know ourselves!”. That’s when you know you’re doing your job right.

RB – What has been your biggest challenge when designing a kid’s room/nursery?  Apart from storage, that doesn’t count as it is everyone’s biggest bug-bear.

BD – Probably ensuring that you provide a design that keep them happy now and in the future. A room they can grow into. But also if the child has any special needs directly related to their well-being, such as sensory disorders that effect their co-ordination and movement. A lot of research and problem solving goes on behind the scenes on these type of designs.

RB – Who or what are some of your design inspirations when thinking about kid’s rooms?

BD – I do look at blogs and Pinterest but I especially love looking at commercial design as those spaces are  generally more aspirational, innovative and creative. So you can take elements of this combined with practical needs. Great examples come from my design hero’s such as Ilse Crawford and radical architects like Zaha Hadid and Thomas Heatherwick.

RB – What do you think makes you stand out among other designers?

BD – It has to be more than just providing client led designs. You have to dig deeper than that. Our interiors are directly linked to our well-being, so you have to understand what makes your client tick and then design around their unique set of aesthetic and practical needs. Throw in a little black book that includes the ‘little known’ coolest of suppliers, both vintage, new & emerging artisans near and far. Along with a keen eye on leading edge interiors around the world to keep ideas fresh and hopefully the recipe of all the above makes you stand out from the crowd!

RB – Where are you continuously drawn to in the UK because of the beautiful interior?

BD – I love Beaverbrook hotel for it’s cool take on period Luxury! Also Ace Hotels and Soho House hotels.

RB – What exciting new projects do you have on the horizon?

BD – Couple of big family homes and second phases of existing client homes. Especially one where I get to design a girl’s bedroom/dressing room and later on in the year design their annex where they’re happy for me to get really creative! Thinking of bringing in my experience with commercial interiors mixed with lots of new and exciting organic and sustainable products on the market. And really bringing the outside in to the max!

RB – Can you describe your interior design signature or style and what is unique about it?

BD – I’d like to think I don’t have one per se. But I often hear from new clients that they like the way I mix up different eras which creates that uncontrived look. I think the biggest compliment I could get from a client on completion of a project, is that their family and friends think ‘it’s so them’ rather than ‘which Interior Designer did you hire!’

Graffiti Wallpaper, room by Barker Design
Wilf's Room by Barker Design

RB – What is your dream project?

BD – Previously, I would have said something like a boutique hotel. But I think now it would have to be the good ‘ol family home. I think the relationship we have with our homes has changed forever. It has to provide so much more than before – and as a designer looking at how a space can be re-structured, zoned, screened off or creating that essential 5th room in the garden for you to escape and work has become really interesting.

RB – What mistakes are your clients regularly making with their interiors?

BD – Under-utilising space. Even a room can be zoned in clever ways to get much more usage out of it. Also, impulse buying which can lead to costly mistakes when you don’t have a style direction to follow. Then, understanding lighting as a major game changer.

RB – How do you stay up to date on kid’s trends? Do trends come in to play as much with kid’s as they might with adults and the rest of the house?

BD – Obviously, Pinterest, Instagram are a good resource. But you usually find that kids can be influenced by what their friends have or my girls have been influenced by Tik-tok trend videos. The key is to understand their needs for work, rest and play then introduce them to a scheme that really resonates them with them, then, I find trends don’t matter so much. They definitely know what they like and don’t like, I’ve find them some of my most decisive clients!

Discover Rooomys Top 5 Wallpapers for Kids’ Rooms – Eclectic Range

Top 5 Wallpapers for kids’ rooms brings strong character to their space, can you find something to suit their personality?

Top 5 Wallpapers for Kids’ Rooms is a commitment we know that, kids’ tastes change so it important to get it right first time round.  It has such a powerful impact on the whole aesthetic it is completely worth it.  Which is why it’s really important to look further than wallpaper designs that are created with kid’s in mind, what is beautiful and quirky for adults is playful and fun for children.  Don’t be fooled by seeing designs styled in adult spaces, imagine your kids face seeing their room covered in quilted elephants, abstract flowers, hot air balloons, guitars, plasters and more.

1 – Pleasure Gardens from Mini Moderns

Kicking off our Top 5 wallpapers for kid’s rooms is a colourful circus, adventure scape.  Following the musical craze that was “The Greatest Showman” children all over the world are still singing the songs and dressing up as bearded ladies, acrobats and ringmasters.  The circus has been bought back to life in their imaginations and children dream of flying through the air on the trapeze.  This incredible design, inspired by the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, will bring joy and entertainment to your child’s room and with the 4 different colour ways there is something for every age and taste. I mean what kid doesn’t want to dream of floating away on an adventure in a hot air balloon whilst drifting off to sleep?

2 – Allsorts from Miss Print

A lovely coral backdrop to the nature inspired, hand drawn designs of Miss Print.  These white wisps remind me of dandelions having been blown away by a little person who adores to see them go off dancing in the air, post probably making a really important wish.  The perfect imperfections bring this design to life attracting the eye all over the wall and cleverly avoiding the too common boredom of repetitive patterns.

They look like they are dancing across the wall, off their merry way somewhere exciting and new.  This design is available in 7 different colour ways, including yellow, blue and monochrome.

3 – Elephants from Galerie Wallcoverings

Elephants are often a favourite animal for children (and adults) I think the pure enormity of them captures our imagination, we are in awe of their size alone but we are endeared to them even more when we learn about their wonderful family dynamic, how they protect their young and nurture them, that although docile giants they know how to stand up for themselves and their family when the time comes.  Who wouldn’t be a fan of all that?  If your child is an elephant fan but you don’t want cartoon, Dumbo esque, cute phuphants all over their room, then this is the wallpaper for you.

4 – Band Aid by Ohh Fleur

Is there a music lover in your house?  They’re going to love this design from interior designer Fleur Ward.  After 20yrs in the interior design industry, Fleur was regularly frustrated by the lack of graphic wallpaper designs for the funkier house owner and for teenagers.  The wonderful end result of this frustration has been Fleur taking matters into her own hands and designing her own range of wonderful bright and strong graphical wallpaper designs.  There is something for each taste; music both modern and classic, skateboarding, nature, travel and photography/selfies.  Each designed has a few colour options and for this music number I love this green/blue…???

5 – Circle Mid Century – Photowall

A made to measure mural that screams come play here!  With 9 different colours used in shapes that provide movement to the space, calming soft edges and all pitched in the perfect tone so that the wall does not become overwhelming and preventing a good nights’ sleep.  A great backdrop in a bedroom or playroom.

If any of these have caught your attention you will notice from the website that they are on that very few are styled with children in mind.  Please remember this when you are researching wallpaper options.  Think about your family style, think about what excites your child, no not Paw Patrol, that will pass all too quickly, and then you are stuck with Marshall and Chase staring at you.

Consider the mood you are trying to set and start there.  Don’t even put ‘kids’ in the search bar, it will open up a wonderful world of fun options for you.  Have fun and remember any queries on your kids’ rooms, send them over, here to help.

Wallpaper that brings nature indoors

Top 5 nature wallpapers for kids’ bedrooms,

which will bring the sense of the outdoors indoors.

Bringing the outside into the inside creates a marvellous sense of calm or adventure for our kids’ it depends which way you go of course.  Here are out top 5 nature inspired wallpapers for kids’ bedrooms that we think you will love and we’re pretty sure there’s something for everyone. There’s bold and dramatic, cute blushes, rural moods and woodland fun.

Gable Wallpaper from Farrow & Ball featured by Rooomy Magazine for kids bedrooms

The Gable design from Farrow & Ball is playful, pastoral, and utterly charming. Depicting traditional village and farmyard scenes with clean, modern styling, its large-scale statement pattern is studded with little details that spark the imagination, taking on added character as you look.  If you are a fan of the English countryside, then this will be a wonderful daily reminder how fantastic our home landscape is.  There are also 8 other colour options to choose from which are worth checking out.

You want more nature but you don’t want it to be overly green and you would really like to warm things up with pink tones.  Fleur Harris has got your back as she designed this wonderful woodland wallpaper in collaboration with Jimmy Cricket, if you have seen our Interview with Little Liberty, you’ll know that Australia are ahead of the curve when it comes to children’s interiors, looking at this design we can see why.

Available in five other shades.  All their wallpaper is printed on non woven paper and is coated for both quality and practicality. The coating allows the wallpaper to be wiped over kept looking clean and lovely which is basically an essential with kids’.

When you think nature don’t just think woodlands and wild animals, you need to think about how much fun is to be had at the farm too. This rural inspired paper brings country living into their rooms with farmyard favourites such as cows and chickens, tractors and of course the farmer and his wife, all designed with a splash of humour.

These beautifully illustrated wallpapers are made and printed in England using traditional techniques on high quality sustainable forest paper and are available in four other shades.

This beautifully design and very fun print is inspired by a teddy bears picnic, an old fashioned and well-loved theme, recreated with a modern edge. In the UK badgers and foxes best represent our woodland heritage sometimes getting a bad press, but think of Roald Dahl’s, Fantastic Mr Fox and the grumpy but beloved Badger in The Wind and the Willows. With every gaze children lose themselves in a sense of curiosity, discovery and wonder. Let your little one tell their own bedtime tale through this wild and whimsical print.

Mysterious Spring Forrest mural by Mural Wallpaper featured by Rooomy magazine for kids' bedrooms

This misty green forest is a lush haven of beautiful green foliage and trees that fill the wilderness with life. The deep perspective delves down into the edge of the spring forest, giving you a continuous view through the landscape, adding an almost 3D effect to the mural that will bring your walls to life. This enchanted forest mural is a calming design, with subtle green tones and a natural feel, it’s perfect for a kids’ bedroom.  What adventures would your kids be going on with this mural in their room, mine would most certainly be imagining themselves as Ewoks on the forest moon of Endor.

There you have it, the top nature wallpapers for kids’ bedrooms, which one is your favourite, would your kid’s choose the same as you?  I love seeing what the girls think of different designs.

The Best Easter Decorations for Kids’ Bedrooms

Looking to make more fun out of Easter this year?

Look at these wonderful decorations, gift ideas and activities.

Here are the best Easter decorations for kid’s bedrooms.  I don’t know about you, but I own 4 boxes of Christmas decorations, one large bin liner of Halloween decorations and carrier bag of Easter bits.  How about you?

Easter is extremely cute with the excitement in the morning of “has he been” akin to Christmas, but of course they are referring to the Easter Bunny.  The adventure that is an egg hunt and then of course ALL the chocolate.  I am not one for making a fuss of things.  The girls always have a good time, and we buy a few bits and there might be an Easter activity/crafting moment, last year I blew eggs for the first time and they loved decorating them.

With a dreary start to the year, a very meh half term and now the return to school I am already looking forward to the Easter holidays and how great to kick them off with Easter being so early this year! If like me you fancy making more of a fuss this year, I have for you covered with these great Easter decorations for kid’s bedrooms.

Easter Decorations for Kids' Bedrooms

I have decided I will actually make some effort for once and when they wake up on Easter Sunday morning, I want them to enjoy noticing a few Easter decorations dotted around, I’m not going to go nuts but a few Honeycomb Bunnies from Meri Meri, maybe some bunting and the odd little decoration dotted around hanging from a picture frame or light switch will be a good start.  No, I am not going to turn my house into something that resembles Alice in Wonderland, I wish I could I am just not that skilled.

Another bonus is the girls have recently become interested in Beatrix Potter, which is awesome, I have been waiting ages.  They love baking so a few Peter Rabbit cupcakes with breakfast will make them smile and then we can make some cookies in the afternoon.

If you fancy making a little bit more fuss for Easter this year, then here are some decorations that I think you will enjoy and more importantly that can be put away and brought out again for the years to come.

When it comes to treats and gifts, what is the deal in your house?  Some families are in the zone of ‘let the chocolate sugary flood gates open’, others opt for the gift route and in our house, we are a mix of the two.  They get an egg from us, the Easter egg hunt, and a wee gift, we know that grandparents will go way over the top, as is their duty, and I somehow make it all last up to the summer holidays, I know I’m such a mean mum 😉

Mountain theme for a boys bedroom

A Mountain theme Bedroom for a Nature Loving Boy

Wilf (12) needed a new room to support his wellbeing

and to reflect his love of nature.

The initial brief was to create a room that Wilf (12) could grow into, with separated out zones for work, rest and play.  But it was very much designed around his specific needs which really impacted his wellbeing. Part of his condition affects the way he processes sensory information so he needed a space that felt calm and safe. So warm enveloping colours and a den-like safe place to retreat to when feeling overwhelmed was key.  We created him a mountain theme for a boys bedroom.

Mum is a Forest School teacher and so they are massively into nature, sustainability and renewable energy (they have an electric car for instance). This naturally had me thinking all things nature and organic products. He also had many collections of books and treasured items which either needed to be ordered and/or included in the design.

Baby Girl Nursery by PIA design featured by rooomy magazine

His Pinterest page (that I asked him to create) reflected images of nature, animals and the planets. The room images were all warm dark inky shades with diffused lighting. It was clear to me that even the hero items in this space literally had to be part of the landscape! I presented the concept image for his room and gained his positive feedback and constructive criticism to start developing the design.

As the main backdrop I chose a mountain scene wallpaper that wrapped two walls. Because of the way he deciphers some things we offered a few choices as we had to be careful that he couldn’t distinguish any scary faces/images in the patterned wallpaper!  I then matched the colours from this palette and wrapped the other two walls in dark blue and took the lighter blue over the ceiling.

My presentation is always to Mum and Dad first. Reason being; is so they can edit the options to suit their budget and also have a little control on how much they want to dial up or down the scheme. It always stays true to the scheme though and still leaves plenty of options for them to choose which provides a fun and collaborative experience.

I loved presenting this room to Wilf, he literally marked me out of 10 for each item, so it was that cut and dry on final edit!

“It makes me feel calm and safe. The colours are soothing and there’s no sharp angles, which makes it feel easy on my eyes, this helps me with aspects of my autism”

The bed was bespoke designed by me, allowing plenty of shelving for books on all sides. There’s even some secret compartments within the bed that even his brother doesn’t know about! It’s made out of Valchromat, essentially a wood fibre that’s individually impregnated with organic dye, so no need for paint, it’s therefore incredibly durable!

The desk and shelves are also bespoke design by me, and out of the same material.

The wardrobe storage fits neatly into the ceiling end of the room and leaves room for a bed-settee. Coffee table, pouffes (and cork notice-board) so he can chill out with friends.

All the lighting is dimmable and diffused to ensure no bare bulbs for glare. He loves the monkey bed-side light, which looks like it’s climbed it’s own monkey bars in the bed! The planet mobile is a stunning piece of art in itself which I’m sure he’ll keep for many years to come! He also has a projector which projects stars and planets on the ceiling to create different scenes for calming. The pendant replicates a fluffy cloud suspended against the mountain scene wallpaper!

It’s a space to work, play & socialise but most importantly to escape to when things get too much. I received the warmest of hugs when it was all completed. A tearful career high for me!

“It’s got everything, tons of cool stuff without being overwhelming.

There’s space for my books, collections, work and even a secret hiding space in my bed.

Marks out of 10, I’d give it a 10, there’s so many cool features!”

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

Wonderful Nursery or a Baby Girl

One family, two rooms, with the aim of keeping a touch of South Africa Part 2

This family needed a wonderful nursery for their baby girls.  They’d moved from Cape Town to England with two daughters and a baby due in a few weeks.  PIA Design to the rescue and they create two fantastic rooms just in time for babies arrival.

Our clients are from Cape Town, South Africa, and wanted their home to be inspired by the textures and colours of their home – they were also interested in designing sustainably, so we looked at natural materials like cork and 100% natural fibre fabrics and started by using the furniture the client already owned.

This gorgeous riverside property was in fantastic condition having been refurbished with a minimal colour palette not too long before our clients moved in, but the client felt the rooms could be re-decorated to add some interest and personality to suit their own taste.

As the family already live in the house with their two young girls and new-born, we tackled the design a few rooms at a time. We started with the design of the little girls’ room and nursery, which were finished just weeks before the baby arrived. Here’s the Nursery, you can see the girl’s shared bedroom in Part 1 here.

Our brief was to design a gender-neutral room for the baby that had a calming and light atmosphere. We often start brainstorming a project by looking for inspiration on furniture websites that we love, in our design library for wallpaper and fabric samples, and Pinterest for scheme ideas. We were seeing a lot of jungle themed rooms which we thought could be fun but did not quite line with the client’s vision of the room. We pitched scheme ideas in warm and neutral colour schemes that paired well with the client’s existing rattan cot and nursing chair.

The nursery was heavily inspired by the colours, textures and materials associated with South Africa, where our clients are from. We started by creating mood boards featuring fabric, wallpaper, and hard finish samples such as grass cloth wallpapers, natural cork panelling and thick, textured fabrics in rustic tones. This helped us create a tactile and organic impression of what the room would feel like. The client really loved our suggestions, and it was a mutual agreement that we would select samples for this room that had a soft and warm vibe, with lighter wood tones and layered soft furnishings.

The scheme generally came together easily, we did have some back and forth about wallpaper options to use on the feature wall behind the cot. We tried a few fun prints from Cole & Son as well as geometric printed patterns; these felt too flat for the look we were trying to achieve. It was not until we began trying textured wallpapers that we felt we were on the right track. In the end, a stunning woven chevron wallcovering from Arte was the right solution that the client loved. We trial and error these design changes by editing visuals of the rooms that we create in Photoshop and sharing wallpaper samples with the client to approve. This process makes testing lots of options very quick, the end result is exactly how the visual suggests.

To make the storage in this room adapt with the new baby as they grew, we suggested bespoke joinery that we could design the internals of, rather than an off the shelf product. We discussed all of the storage requirements to make sure we were designing exactly what the client wanted. By incorporating adjustable shelves and hanging rails into the design, the these can be moved when clothing requirements change over time. The gold leaf and whitewashed cork panels we had inserted into the shaker frames of the wardrobe doors add a touch of timeless luxury that should stand the test of time and adapt with any changes made to the room scheme over time. Anthropologie leather and brass handles added an extra touch of luxury to the beautiful wardrobe.

For the window dressings, we used a layered approach of over-length linen curtains with a subtle chevron pattern, as well as a blackout roman blind with a black and white embroidered motif for contrast. As well as being a beautiful design feature that felt luxurious and comforting, it was practical in blocking out as much light as possible to make sure the baby could sleep as soundly as possible!

We didn’t want the room to feel too refined and neutral (it’s a kids room after all!), so we popped in some fun accents like the African animal prints on the wall and the funky Pooky floor lamp with a contrasting black and white pleated shade. We added some natural textured accessories with the elephant head wall hanging, rattan mirror, seagrass storage baskets and leather footstool.

We have since worked on other rooms for this family’s home and their feedback from spending more time in the Nursery is that it’s become a popular room to come together and relax on the giant sheepskin rug!

When we were signed on to the project we had an 8 week deadline to work to before the clients baby was due, we wanted to make sure the room was finished and ready by this time. This offered some challenges with fabric and wallpaper lead times, coordinating the joinery and decorating works to finish on time, and of course enough time to go through design changes. However, it all came together nicely in the end and the client loved the soft nature of the room with natural accents that reminded them of their home in South Africa, the light and warm atmosphere of the room has a calming effect.

PIA Design’s objective is to interpret the style preferences of each client and develop something tailored to them. As a result all projects take on their own, unique direction, but there is also a common thread that underlies each one, apparent in the use of natural  materials – wood, stone, cork, metal etc, that can be used to add texture, but also colour to a scheme before simply specifying paint.

A love of nature is at the heart of PIA’s designs and her philosophy is that the best form of sustainability is a carefully considered scheme and the use of quality materials – natural materials have a timeless quality about them that surpasses trends whilst also standing the test of time: some materials even grow more beautiful with age.
