The Nursery Styling Report

Chloe Spillett shares her expert advice for nursery styling.

For many, from the first moment we learn  we’re expecting our attention will turn immediately to the nursery. It’s hard to resist dreaming up the most beautiful spaces imaginable for our new arrivals. It’s a wonderful time filled with much joy and anticipation.

Of course, not everyone will feel this way. For some, tackling the nursery is daunting. Lots of us opt for the smallest room in the house for the nursery and with such an extensive wishlist, there can be A LOT of stuff to cram into a small space. But it doesn’t have to be a chore. I’m here to help you make informed choices about the products you really need, and while I’m at it, I’ve got some jaw droppingly beautiful options up my sleeve for your nursery styling.

With a background in psychology I’ve always been a firm believer that our surroundings are fundamentally important for our sense of well being and our personal development. This is true not only for baby but for other family members who will be using the space too. The nursery is a place where many memories will be formed, bonding will take place between caregivers and siblings.

The more inspiring the environment you and your baby are in, the more likely you will attach positivity to those memories. And yes, there will be sick and poo; lots of it! But believe me you will even look back on that one day with fondness.

Sleep like a baby…

Where did that expression even come from? Is it meant to be ironic? Hey, you might get lucky, but for most it’s a prepare for the worst and hope for the best type situation. Regardless of whether you’ve got a good sleeper or an all night raver, a cot is an essential piece of kit.

So what’s money well spent? Thing is, it’s hard to tell when your little one is going to be ready to transition from cot to bed (I know you probably don’t want to think about them getting too big, but it happens) and sometimes we think they’re ready before they really are. So to save all that to-ing and fro-ing, a cot-bed is definitely a viable option and can also be kinder on the bank balance long term.

That said, this one is certainly an investment piece but boy does it make a statement! It’s chrome plated and built to last so if you’re planning on larger family it’s well worth considering. Available in a range of colours, it’s a timeless classic.

All Change!

There’s no two ways about it – changing nappies is relentless. Even if you’ve never changed a nappy before in your life (I hadn’t before I became a Mum) you’ll soon be doing it in your sleep.

It’s really important that your baby is safe and that you’re both comfortable.  Although changing tables are a popular choice, they aren’t always a necessity. There are lots of changing baskets and wedge mats available with curved sides to ensure baby can’t roll. This way you can pair with more timeless furniture in your nursery styling, such as a chest of drawers which will still have a place in an older child’s bedroom. Future proofing is always a good idea!

Storage is key

Stuff, stuff, stuff!! Little people come with a lot of baggage.  If you want a relaxing and calming space in your nursery you’ll need to pull out your A game when it comes to storage, but don’t fear- there are plenty of options!

I often get asked about soft toy storage. Cuddly toys are wonderful for development and eliciting role play and nurturing behaviours. As a child I must have had hundreds but the truth is they can also house unwanted bacteria and dust mite and can therefore trigger allergies. I find the best solution to tackle this is to have a few soft toys dotted around the room and place the others in easily accessible storage and then rotate.

These bags are a great option for nursery styling:

For everything else the trusty foldable crate never fails! They come in a range of sizes and are stackable. The hardest part is choosing a colourway!

Learning through play

This last decade has been pivotal for children’s play, toys and accessories. Long gone are the days when the market was completely saturated with unpalatable bright colours and plastic galore. Don’t get me wrong babies love colour and so do I, but I am really enjoying the fact that there are so many products now available that appeal to a wide range of tastes whilst also ticking all the boxes when it comes to play value, developmental aids and nursery styling and beauty.

These are my top picks:

Come Sit with me a while

Most people will be divided on the nursing chair front. On the one hand its really important that you have somewhere super snuggly and to feed your baby; you could be warming the seat several times a night after all!

But on the other hand nursing chairs can be big, bulky and not winning any prizes in the aesthetics dept. There are few that break the generic mould like the Baby Grey, Nelli Rocker

And if you’re still not feeling the nursing chair you could always opt for an armchair that rocks in both meanings of the word, that will make a statement in any any room in the house such as this one from Made.com:

Made.com Kolton rocking chair as seen in Rooomy magazine

There you have it, a round-up of the nursery styling essentials, with these in mind you’ll have ticked off all the practical elements for your nursery, sleep, change and feed, plus the essential storage. Once these have been chosen you can start to have some fun with accessories; garlands, cushions, a rug (perfect for protecting the carpet), artwork, photos.

Happy Decorating and wishing you a wonderful time getting to know your lovely new baby.

Top 10 Beds for Kids Bedrooms

Top 10 Beds for Kids Bedrooms

Top 10 Beds for Kids Bedrooms

Rooomy picks the best beds for 2021.

Essential furniture for kids’ bedrooms.  Are you looking for a modern design, bunk bed, desk space or maybe something for the gamer in the house? Check out our Top 10 Beds for Kids’.

Kids beds are without a doubt one item you will find in every child’s bedroom. We all need somewhere to sleep right? There is always the exception to the rule when a child absolutely loves that sense of camping and adventure and is honestly happiest on a mattress of the floor, but safe to say, most of us have a bed sitting in our kid’s bedroom. Have you ever googled ‘kid’s beds? The lists are endless, the options are immense, and the price tags vary A LOT!

You need to think about budget and longevity. What can you afford? How long do you need it to last? If it needs to last longer than a couple of years then you are definitely better off waiting a few months, saving a bit more so that you can increase that bed budget, you will be much happier on the long run when the bed lasts a decade.

Trust me I went for the cheap option a few years back; over the three years it was used I replaced 4 slats and eventually place a piece of plaster board under the mattress as the slats were no longer salvageable.

Also, if the kids are desperate for the bunk bed or the bed with gaming area then why not make it part of the birthday present? Then family and friends can contribute, just like saving up for that bike or PS5. Then you can make a happy confident bed purchase that will last, how lovely.

We celebrated World Sleep Day two weeks back and in the spirit of everything now having a themed day or month, March is National Bed Month, yes, I can hear you giggling.  However, it creates the perfect opportunity for me to pick the Top 10 beds for kid’s bedrooms 2021.  Like I say, bed options are endless, so I have tried to keep the list varied for you.

Cuckooland – New York Metal Bed

Hospital beds have had a huge resurgence. Rooomy’s own creative director was reminiscing about her sister’s childhood metal/hospital bed, which she swapped around one Sunday when her sister was out. All in the hope that she could one day reclaim it as her own when she was older.  It’s still waiting for her when she’s ready for it.  Never mind it was too small, that did not matter, it was all about how it looked and how happy it made her.

Well, they have made a comeback as you’ll see in the latest issue of Rooomy. You’ll find metal beds in both the interviews with Eli at Home, her daughters is bright yellow. And in Carol Maxwell of Max Made Me, where her friend’s daughters’ room is home to a classic white one.

Cuckooland have a great metal frame and the best part is that there are 6 colours to choose from, love it when there is a style you like and then there are all the colour options so that there is something for everyone.

High Bed and Desk with Wardrobe

Perfect Choice – High Sleeper + Wardrobe + Desk

A bed that truly has everything, the high bed with deep steps offering drawers for storage, a wardrobe, a desk, and plenty more cupboards and drawer to keep everything tidy and organised.

When it comes to your kid’s room, we know storage is your number one battle, this set up truly answers this call for space whilst offering the essentials sleeping area and a place to craft, game, study, whatever they need. It can change as their needs/likes do.

Perfect Choice – Bunk Bed + Storage

Are your kids sharing a room or maybe once lockdown is behind us your child has big plans for a lot of sleepers. There is a lot of play dates/sleepovers to catch up on to be fair to them.

From the same brand as above, I am listing this bed, minus the desk yes, but desk space is extra, bed space is essential. The main focus here is all the lovely storage, making use of the steps is brilliant and the shelves by the lower bunk are perfect for nick-nacks, books, lighting, photos and the rest of their stuff.

The same applies as above, there are a few colour options to help make the bed fit with the rest of the room.

Bunk Bed & Storage

Little Folks Furniture – Classic Beech + Trundle

This Nordic inspired children’s Classic Beech single bed with hideaway storage and sleepover trundle bed, is crafted from a solid Beech hardwood frame (no soft, knotty painted pine in sight!)  A sturdy children’s single bed is available in this trendy muted grey as well as Pure White for a modern or traditional bedroom, and with gentle slatted detailing on the ends, the timeless design will seamlessly tie into any interior scheme.

This full-size single bed features a contemporary low foot end providing an elegant edge, also making it an ideal first bed for younger children or smaller bedrooms. The clever space saving rollout trundle provides huge storage space and, with the addition of a trundle mattress, instantly turns into a sleepover bed for those extra guests and we know they are coming soon, I think sleepovers will be the trend of 2022!!

Bobby Rabbit – Side House Bed Single

When I was researching beds’, this jumped off the screen! Which meant there was no huge surprise to finding out it is a best seller which makes it a not brainer for our Top 10 Beds for Kids.  What kid does not want to sleep in a mini house?  It is like having the garden play house actually in their bedroom, and you can have so much fun adding bunting, lights, sheets, there will be endless fun had on this bed, it’s a house for a tea party, it’s a pirate ship, it’s a fairy den, so many great play opportunities here!

As for longevity, as your child grows, add loads of cushions and it becomes a great sofa space to hang out with friends.  Whatever you do, if you are chopping around and not quite set don’t let your kid see this, you’ll never hear the end of it.

Furniture and Choice – Comet Midsleeper

If high beds make the bedroom feel smaller then midsleeper’s are perfect, this find from Furniture and Choice is so smart, a bed that has a small space for study which could be a huge plus as it means there’s not one desk space that can just have more and more stuff piled onto it, it’s enforced a minimalist look for work which is ideal.  Too many distractions otherwise, there are a few shelves which ticks the extra storage box and there is even space underneath which acts as the perfect den for the younger children and a great storage area for the older kids, please be realistic that when you ask your teen to tidy their room, this is where everything will be when they later can’t find it.

Wayfair – Bunk Bed + Shelves

This compact bunk bed looks stunning, the design is well thought out with both kids, design, and storage all in mind.  Shelves for both bunks and the clever way the top row of shelves does not go all the way along to the end, stopping the structure of the bed from looking too much like a large cuboid, making it instantly stylish at the same time.  To make the most of this bed you need to keep the steps away from a wall as there is access to further shelf storage here, so clever, anything that keeps storage out of site is a major bonus for any parent.  Also available in white.

Bunk Bed with Shelves from Wayfair

Aspace – Southside Cabin bed

A simple single bed with perfect hideaway storage which makes parents oh so incredibly happy, two cupboards and drawer but the well thought out shelf allows for much loved nick-nacks to be displayed whilst also helping the aesthetic of the bed to not look too much like a wooden box with a bed on top, very clever, the final result a great looking bed where stuff can be out of site, truly make the most of the concept of under the bed storage.  I really like the contrast of the white and wood too.

Southside Oak Cabin Bed for kids bedrooms from Aspace

Wayfair – High Sleeper for a Gamer

Does a gaming fan live in your house? With this bed they would be the envy of all their friends, hahaha!

With a gaming fan this fan solves two potential problems, space, or zoning.

If you are short on floor space, and they of course need their bed but just have to have somewhere to game then clearly this bed is a winner. More importantly if solves zoning. We know zoning is important in the kitchen and more recently bedrooms too, but this last year had shone a very bright light on how paramount it is for our kids. Too many teens have been online schooling, gaming or on their phone and watching Netflix all from their bed, they No1 job of the bed, to sleep, goes to the bottom of the list and then we wonder why they cannot sleep well.

Bed space needs to be a haven, just as we teach our babies that the cot is their sleep zone, this is no different. How is the brain supposed to know what is expected to do? With a bed like this, problem solved, an escape pod up high, leaving it all behind and a fun place to game and be merry. The blue edging is great, add some LED strip lights and you are away!

Bobby Rabbit – Billy Bed

As soon as I saw this bed, I knew it was going in the Top 10 beds for kids’ bedrooms, I think it was the colour that first caught my eye and then after a closer look I fell in love with the perfect balance of contemporary design that is clearly for a child’s room.  It is tranquil in every way; it looks remarkably simple and easy on the eye.  With lovely, rounded edges it appears smooth and soft, and the olive-green tone is calming and wonderful.

This bed does more than just its job of providing a sleep zone, it impacts the aesthetic of the whole space. You would be able to style this so easily through the year, cosy warm tones in the winter and fresh brighter tones in spring, the perfect place to snuggle down for a peaceful night’s rest.  It is also available in white, pink, and grey, just in case you are not as obsessed with the olive like me.

Introducing New Rooomy Contributor Justine Hodgson-Barker

Everything you need to know about Barker Design,

where the human experience is at the heart of every design

Justine Hodgson-Barker of Barker Design Rooomy Magazine contributor

RB – What do you enjoy most about designing kid’s rooms?

BD – The fun and creative process of it all. But mostly seeing their little faces when you’ve given them a space of their very own, a sanctuary for them to escape that totally different from the rest of the house.

RB – What is your number 1 must when it comes to kid’s rooms?

BD – Other than storage? Zones for work, rest and play!  Something that’s been even more essential during lockdown.

RB – Our readers are always stressing over storage in their kid’s rooms.  What are your top tips?

BD – Give them a room to grow into. Give them a dedicated space for their collections for instance, as this will change. Then, in terms of where to splurge and save, splurge on lighting, hard-wearing flooring and furniture but save on the accessories as these are usually trend led or age specific.

RB – Do you interview your small clients?  How do you involve them in the process? Any key questions you ask them?

BD – Yes absolutely. I mainly keep it visual based as it’s more fun – so I get them to do their own Pinterest page. Then the kind of questions I do ask are all about them and their hobbies.

RB – Do you think there are some discernible differences when approaching the design of a kid’s room compared to the rest of the house?

BD – Yes definitely. Don’t treat the kids rooms with the same design direction as the rest of the house. Whist there should be some cohesiveness –  these rooms should be just as individual as the grown up room. So dial up the fun!

RB – Do you have any rules when it comes to design?

BD – Subject to lockdown, always meeting the client and seeing the property in person. I know there’s a lot of e-design around and I think there’s a big market for that. But we spend so much time in our homes nothing beats the empathy you gain from truly understanding your client and studying the bones of the property, it’s period and it’s location. Makes for a much more fitting and unique design. After all, our homes are an extension and expression of ourselves!

RB – What have been some of your favourite projects.

BD – The huge Decimus Burton Villa that landed me in Living etc (personal career goal!). But mainly the free reign I had with working with that client as she such a real risk taker! And my current project (where we’re just starting phase two of their project) when they declared “just go for it, you know us better than we know ourselves!”. That’s when you know you’re doing your job right.

RB – What has been your biggest challenge when designing a kid’s room/nursery?  Apart from storage, that doesn’t count as it is everyone’s biggest bug-bear.

BD – Probably ensuring that you provide a design that keep them happy now and in the future. A room they can grow into. But also if the child has any special needs directly related to their well-being, such as sensory disorders that effect their co-ordination and movement. A lot of research and problem solving goes on behind the scenes on these type of designs.

RB – Who or what are some of your design inspirations when thinking about kid’s rooms?

BD – I do look at blogs and Pinterest but I especially love looking at commercial design as those spaces are  generally more aspirational, innovative and creative. So you can take elements of this combined with practical needs. Great examples come from my design hero’s such as Ilse Crawford and radical architects like Zaha Hadid and Thomas Heatherwick.

RB – What do you think makes you stand out among other designers?

BD – It has to be more than just providing client led designs. You have to dig deeper than that. Our interiors are directly linked to our well-being, so you have to understand what makes your client tick and then design around their unique set of aesthetic and practical needs. Throw in a little black book that includes the ‘little known’ coolest of suppliers, both vintage, new & emerging artisans near and far. Along with a keen eye on leading edge interiors around the world to keep ideas fresh and hopefully the recipe of all the above makes you stand out from the crowd!

RB – Where are you continuously drawn to in the UK because of the beautiful interior?

BD – I love Beaverbrook hotel for it’s cool take on period Luxury! Also Ace Hotels and Soho House hotels.

RB – What exciting new projects do you have on the horizon?

BD – Couple of big family homes and second phases of existing client homes. Especially one where I get to design a girl’s bedroom/dressing room and later on in the year design their annex where they’re happy for me to get really creative! Thinking of bringing in my experience with commercial interiors mixed with lots of new and exciting organic and sustainable products on the market. And really bringing the outside in to the max!

RB – Can you describe your interior design signature or style and what is unique about it?

BD – I’d like to think I don’t have one per se. But I often hear from new clients that they like the way I mix up different eras which creates that uncontrived look. I think the biggest compliment I could get from a client on completion of a project, is that their family and friends think ‘it’s so them’ rather than ‘which Interior Designer did you hire!’

Graffiti Wallpaper, room by Barker Design
Wilf's Room by Barker Design

RB – What is your dream project?

BD – Previously, I would have said something like a boutique hotel. But I think now it would have to be the good ‘ol family home. I think the relationship we have with our homes has changed forever. It has to provide so much more than before – and as a designer looking at how a space can be re-structured, zoned, screened off or creating that essential 5th room in the garden for you to escape and work has become really interesting.

RB – What mistakes are your clients regularly making with their interiors?

BD – Under-utilising space. Even a room can be zoned in clever ways to get much more usage out of it. Also, impulse buying which can lead to costly mistakes when you don’t have a style direction to follow. Then, understanding lighting as a major game changer.

RB – How do you stay up to date on kid’s trends? Do trends come in to play as much with kid’s as they might with adults and the rest of the house?

BD – Obviously, Pinterest, Instagram are a good resource. But you usually find that kids can be influenced by what their friends have or my girls have been influenced by Tik-tok trend videos. The key is to understand their needs for work, rest and play then introduce them to a scheme that really resonates them with them, then, I find trends don’t matter so much. They definitely know what they like and don’t like, I’ve find them some of my most decisive clients!

Discover Rooomys Top 5 Wallpapers for Kids’ Rooms – Eclectic Range

Top 5 Wallpapers for kids’ rooms brings strong character to their space, can you find something to suit their personality?

Top 5 Wallpapers for Kids’ Rooms is a commitment we know that, kids’ tastes change so it important to get it right first time round.  It has such a powerful impact on the whole aesthetic it is completely worth it.  Which is why it’s really important to look further than wallpaper designs that are created with kid’s in mind, what is beautiful and quirky for adults is playful and fun for children.  Don’t be fooled by seeing designs styled in adult spaces, imagine your kids face seeing their room covered in quilted elephants, abstract flowers, hot air balloons, guitars, plasters and more.

1 – Pleasure Gardens from Mini Moderns

Kicking off our Top 5 wallpapers for kid’s rooms is a colourful circus, adventure scape.  Following the musical craze that was “The Greatest Showman” children all over the world are still singing the songs and dressing up as bearded ladies, acrobats and ringmasters.  The circus has been bought back to life in their imaginations and children dream of flying through the air on the trapeze.  This incredible design, inspired by the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, will bring joy and entertainment to your child’s room and with the 4 different colour ways there is something for every age and taste. I mean what kid doesn’t want to dream of floating away on an adventure in a hot air balloon whilst drifting off to sleep?

2 – Allsorts from Miss Print

A lovely coral backdrop to the nature inspired, hand drawn designs of Miss Print.  These white wisps remind me of dandelions having been blown away by a little person who adores to see them go off dancing in the air, post probably making a really important wish.  The perfect imperfections bring this design to life attracting the eye all over the wall and cleverly avoiding the too common boredom of repetitive patterns.

They look like they are dancing across the wall, off their merry way somewhere exciting and new.  This design is available in 7 different colour ways, including yellow, blue and monochrome.

3 – Elephants from Galerie Wallcoverings

Elephants are often a favourite animal for children (and adults) I think the pure enormity of them captures our imagination, we are in awe of their size alone but we are endeared to them even more when we learn about their wonderful family dynamic, how they protect their young and nurture them, that although docile giants they know how to stand up for themselves and their family when the time comes.  Who wouldn’t be a fan of all that?  If your child is an elephant fan but you don’t want cartoon, Dumbo esque, cute phuphants all over their room, then this is the wallpaper for you.

4 – Band Aid by Ohh Fleur

Is there a music lover in your house?  They’re going to love this design from interior designer Fleur Ward.  After 20yrs in the interior design industry, Fleur was regularly frustrated by the lack of graphic wallpaper designs for the funkier house owner and for teenagers.  The wonderful end result of this frustration has been Fleur taking matters into her own hands and designing her own range of wonderful bright and strong graphical wallpaper designs.  There is something for each taste; music both modern and classic, skateboarding, nature, travel and photography/selfies.  Each designed has a few colour options and for this music number I love this green/blue…???

5 – Circle Mid Century – Photowall

A made to measure mural that screams come play here!  With 9 different colours used in shapes that provide movement to the space, calming soft edges and all pitched in the perfect tone so that the wall does not become overwhelming and preventing a good nights’ sleep.  A great backdrop in a bedroom or playroom.

If any of these have caught your attention you will notice from the website that they are on that very few are styled with children in mind.  Please remember this when you are researching wallpaper options.  Think about your family style, think about what excites your child, no not Paw Patrol, that will pass all too quickly, and then you are stuck with Marshall and Chase staring at you.

Consider the mood you are trying to set and start there.  Don’t even put ‘kids’ in the search bar, it will open up a wonderful world of fun options for you.  Have fun and remember any queries on your kids’ rooms, send them over, here to help.

When you think nature don’t just think woodlands and wild animals, you need to think about how much fun is to be had at the farm too. This rural inspired paper brings country living into their rooms with farmyard favourites such as cows and chickens, tractors and of course the farmer and his wife, all designed with a splash of humour.

These beautifully illustrated wallpapers are made and printed in England using traditional techniques on high quality sustainable forest paper and are available in four other shades.

This beautifully design and very fun print is inspired by a teddy bears picnic, an old fashioned and well-loved theme, recreated with a modern edge. In the UK badgers and foxes best represent our woodland heritage sometimes getting a bad press, but think of Roald Dahl’s, Fantastic Mr Fox and the grumpy but beloved Badger in The Wind and the Willows. With every gaze children lose themselves in a sense of curiosity, discovery and wonder. Let your little one tell their own bedtime tale through this wild and whimsical print.

Mysterious Spring Forrest mural by Mural Wallpaper featured by Rooomy magazine for kids' bedrooms

This misty green forest is a lush haven of beautiful green foliage and trees that fill the wilderness with life. The deep perspective delves down into the edge of the spring forest, giving you a continuous view through the landscape, adding an almost 3D effect to the mural that will bring your walls to life. This enchanted forest mural is a calming design, with subtle green tones and a natural feel, it’s perfect for a kids’ bedroom.  What adventures would your kids be going on with this mural in their room, mine would most certainly be imagining themselves as Ewoks on the forest moon of Endor.
