Bring the outside in to get your child’s bedroom Spring ready

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your child’s room. It’s not just their wardrobe that needs an update, chunky wool knits optimistically being swapped for lighter linens, the same will need to happen with their blankets and bedding too.

We know about the practicalities of the warmer months approaching, but what about the trends appearing through this seasons’ offerings?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, nature will play a big part – woodland motifs, natural woods and textured prints are all there, but it’s also playful. Teepees and tents and accessories, such as bunting and hanging plants, are just some of the fun ways to help you bring the outdoors in for your little ones to enjoy until they can happily waddle off to play outside in the warmer months’ ahead.

This bed doubles up as a tent to create the ultimate hideaway. All you need to add are oversized scatter cushions, beanbags and simple wooden accessories.

Pale, textured woods will instantly bring nature into the room, consider adding pops of mustard and burnt orange to draw your eye across the room. I love the prints with the matching frames.

Textiles are probably the easiest (and cheapest) way to update a space. Layer rugs, cushions and blankets in different textures and patterns to create fun space to cosy up in.

Small, upholstered pieces of furniture are a great way to bring pretty botanical prints into your child’s bedroom. All you need to accessorise with are plants, we love these glass ones, be sure to hang them out of reach.

Create a mini-getaway in the corner of a living room or play room with a teepee. Throws and fairy lights will keep it looking magical as the night draws in.

Adding pastel accessories to minimal spaces gives a room a stylish Scandinavian feel, bunting and animal prints here keep it all looking playful and light. Check out that toy box, storage for unwanted clutter will help keep the space looking calm.

A monochrome colour scheme will always look fresh and modern, and it allows you to be more playful with pattern. We love the animal cushions, fun ornaments and abstract mountains here.

Tree-printed wallpaper adds warmth to this otherwise white nursery whilst the stag head brings some unexpected quirkiness. Decorating above key spaces like changing areas are ideal for creating a focal point in a room.

The Spring season is when new collections come to life and fabulous designs are released to spark our imagination. This year is no different and I’d like to share my personal favourites from the Scottish Interiors Showcase, the biggest trade-only event in the UK.

Animals, birds and botanicals were the most notable trend in the world of textiles and wallcoverings. With colour palettes ranging from subtle pastels to punchy, electric blues, vibrant reds and mustard yellows.

Two companies in particular caught my eye with their fantastic range of children’s wallpaper. One you probably all know, Sweden’s, Borastapeter, manufacturing wallpapers since 1905! The other brand, Caselio, is also renowned for its innovative and high-quality products, coming to us from France with their bold and funky, modern designs. They are both very strong contenders, yet with very different visions. 

‘One wallpaper and thousands of tales’, is the new collection from Borastapeter Scandinavian Designers Mini and Scandinavian Designers II. These playful wallpapers feature fantastic patterns from some of Sweden’s foremost children’s artists and playtime inspirations. Whimsical, figurative motifs are designed to engage, delight and inspire; squirrels exploring, hooting owls in hats – telling a bed time story has never been easier! l truly love the calming qualities of Poem d’ Amour and my favourite is a shaggy polar bear that swims and frolics among lovely little water bubbles.

A pattern from the large, playful collection that Stig Lindberg composed for an exhibition at NK (the Nordic Company) in 1947. The managing director, Astrid Sampe fell in love with the pattern to such a degree that she had it turned into a dress. Stig Lindberg then made a necklace and bracelet of porcelain flowers for the dress that is now on display at the Nordic Museum.

A hand-drawn wallpaper for children’s rooms that sees squirrels swinging, hanging upside down and gathering acorns. The contrasts, details and vibrant colours get the imagination going in this narrative pattern, created in Boråstapeter’s Design Studio. Here with a dark base, which creates a cosy, playful feel in children’s rooms. We’d been living in our house for around three years before the little one arrived. Beforehand, the nursery was a spare room which was never really used. It was more of a dumping ground and a place to hang our washing. After finding out we were having a baby, I was straight onto Pinterest looking for ideas on what we could do.  

I love how much sun the room gets and I wanted to keep the room nice and light. As the ceilings are low we decided to paint half the walls to help make the room look bigger. I had spotted the Eleanor Bowmer wallpaper before we knew we were having a girl, as soon as we found out it was ordered.

Many of my purchases are all from small businesses, with my favourite being our Totter and Tumble play mat. The original wooden flooring isn’t ideal for crawling babies, so the play mat is perfect. One of the great things about it is it is double sided.

Some of the other items are, the wooden rainbow from Autumns Corner, prints on the walls from Pretty in Print Art, The Charming Press and It’s Made by Leah.

As we already had the chest of drawers I needed a changing mat that would be able to sit on the top. We went for one from the small business Mabel & Fox which looks great against the wallpaper.

Before we brought the furniture we had and idea of where we wanted things to go. However, my measuring skills weren’t quite up to scratch and I incorrectly measured the space, whoops! In the end we were much happier with the layout as it has given us more floor space.

The chest of drawers were from my late godmother and I want to find nursery furniture that would match. I struggled to find nursery furniture that I wanted and we ended up buying the cot and wardrobe from Ikea – although they don’t match, I think they work with the chest of drawers.

If we were to do the room again, I would like to have more space for books and toys and also some more plants in there. I think I would also utilise the space which is used as our airing cupboard, and instead, use this as a wardrobe, giving us more floor space.

BRIGHTEN THE FLOOR AND PROTECT IT

If you have a hardwood floor, you will want to bring a soft layer to the floor for you to be laying on and later for babe to be crawling on. If you have carpet in your nursery, we highly recommend you protect it with a rug. They add another point of interest to the room and will keep hard floors warm and carpeted floors safe.

Pretty In Print – Mermaids

Who misses swimming? I do! Mermaids are wonderful mythical creatures, Disney has made them cute and adorable but traditionally they are dangerous, even murderous.

These ladies here simply look like they are having a wonderful time being free in the water among the reeds and either exploring or playing together but most important of all, they are together, I miss my friends do you?

You know where to go to find out how much a whale weigh don’t you? A Whale Weigh Station. Sorry that was my husband in my ear and then of course I couldn’t resist adding it, we all need the humour right now, however dad esq it is.

Anyway, continuing along the much-loved rainbow theme, here’s a beauty from the deep. Little Letter Studio – Awesome Alphabet Wallhanging

If you’ve seen the latest issue of Rooomy or the wallpaper post from two weeks ago you’ll know that I am a fan the Awesome Alphabet by Little Letter Studio, mostly because I like the Golfing Gorilla, whom I have now named Gerald after my dad, weird really as my dad doesn’t like golf, but I like the name Gerald.

I was thrilled when I saw the wallpaper design had been transformed into a wall hanging, wallpaper is a big commitment, being able to pop this up in your child’s bedroom is of course helpful for this early years, learning to grasp the alphabet but also playful enough for then they are older and thinking about how creative.

Ursula of Room to Bloom shares her nature inspired

nursery design for baby Oona.

 

This is Oona’s room. When Oona’s family moved country, her mum asked me to design her and her sister’s bedroom, to help them settle into their new life abroad. We worked remotely via email, calls and facetime, proof that this can work just as well as being there in person.

Oona’s nursery was created in the smallest room in the house, leading off her sister’s bedroom. My main focus was to make the room feel as spacious and restful as possible.

I choose a peaceful, dusty green colour as the main theme for the room, to counteract and mellow the strongly coloured oak floor. The focal point is a pretty woodland wallpaper – it has echoes of the floor colour in it so it is the perfect connecting background. There’s lots of sweet detail in the design to hold Oona’s gaze.

The simple natural wooden cot is livened up with bedding in the wallpaper’s accent colours. Because the bed blends in with the floor, the room feels as spacious as it can be – the cot’s open design also helps with this. To anchor the cot we painted a dusty green border alongside, creating a two tone wall. An oak framed pear print adds height and creates a cosy corner.

A there was not much space for lots of furniture, we prioritised clothes storage at this early stage. Using the height of the room, I found a vintage single wardrobe in just the right colour, so it blends in with the background – another trick to make a small space feel larger.

As most of Oona’s toys were stored elsewhere, we decided a simple play corner with cushions, book ledges and a house shelf on the wall would suffice for the early years. Oona just loves rearranging small toys in the house. Later down the line a compact toy or book cabinet could be added.

To style the room I used vintage elements, like the small chairs and the suitcase on top of the wardrobe, and continued a light woodland theme with a bunny lamp, a small fox head on the wall and other creatures. A grey bear shaped rug covers some of the floor’s surface, which helps keep it in check and provides a soft surface. Adding a playful touch, it tones with the grey curtains, keeping the mood calm.

Despite the distance and having to work remotely, I think the design was really successful and my client did a great job at overseeing the installation. I just love how pretty and together the room has turned out!
